5 Questions with Fresno’s Austin Liu

FRESNO (Fri, March 16, 2018)– Before Austin “The Dynasty” Liu throws down for 559 Fights on Saturday in Fresno, LIVE on FloCombat, the up-and-coming Fresno fighter sat down with FightBookMMA.

How would you describe 2017 in one word?

I would say, more than anything, it was a learning experience. At first, I wanted to have a perfect record and a “pretty” amateur career. But I realized that your amateur record isn’t permanent — it gets wiped when you turn pro, so I’m just taking every fight as a learning experience.

How important is it, do you think, to get a loss or two “out of your system” while still an amateur?

I think it’s extremely important. A lot of undefeated amateurs have their first loss as a professional and they don’t really know how to deal with it, and sometimes it destroys their career. Now that I’ve been through the highs and the lows as an amateur, I can get through anything as a pro.

How has this year started for you so far?

It’s been good. Last year I was always in the gym, taking fights camps back to back, so I didn’t have a lot of time to reset in between fights. And, for all of my fights, I was always game planning for my opponent; I was giving them too much credit and not focusing enough on myself, and what I’m going to do in my fights. For this fight camp, we focused a lot on myself as a martial artist; not what my opponent is going to do.

What are you going to do Saturday in Fresno?

I’m going to win by any means necessary. I haven’t set out a specific game plan for myself; I’m just going to go out there, be as aggressive as I can be, and I’m going to go out there and get the win by any means necessary.

Do you have any celebrations planned for after your victory?

After every fight we’ll go out to eat and get some chocolate chip pancakes. But, other than that, nothing too crazy. I’m not really big on celebrating after my fights because I’m always thinking about the next one — it’s hard for me to not think about progressing.
