Former UFC light heavyweight challenger and current #1 contender was expressing willingness to wait for Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier to settle their business before stepping into the Octagon for his 205lb. title shot. “The Mauler” did get his rematch with Jones set for UFC 178, but injury forced him out of the contest to be replaced by Cormier, then as things go in MMA that fight was called off because of an injury to Jon Jones.
With all that going on there isn’t a whole lot of choice for Gustafsson, there were talks for him to face off against Anthony Johnson. Then in a sad state of affairs, Johnson was suspended indefinitely after an order of protection was taken out against Johnson by a former girlfriend. Now with even less options enter Rashad Evans. Evans himself a former UFC light heavyweight champion and challenger to Jones’s reign.
Neither of these two men have been terribly active of late. Gustafsson’s last venture into the Octagon came in March with a TKO victory over Jimi Manuwa, while Evans’s last fight was a TKO win over Chael Sonnen, November of 2013.
Now this fight which is earmarked to take place January 24, 2015 is just speculation at this point, but as always we will keep you posted.
