ARON MARTINEZ: “I’m an old school ‘Rocky’ fighter. That’s what I’m about.”

ORANGE, Calif. (Jan. 13, 2016) – The road to the top is often a difficult one, and for welterweight Aron Martinez (20-4-1, 4 KOs), each fight appears more difficult than the last with seemingly more at stake.

After dispatching former two-division world champion Devon Alexander in October, the Los Angeles-based Martinez meets heralded southpaw Sammy Vasquez (20-0, 14 KOs) of Pennsylvania on Saturday, Jan. 23, from STAPLES CENTER in Los Angeles. The 10-round bout is televised in primetime on FOX.

Prior to his win over Alexander, Martinez produced what seemed to be an upset victory over former three-division world champion Robert Guerrero, only to be denied in a controversial split decision ruling by the judges.

Martinez now finds himself in another challenging test against the heavy-handed Vasquez. The 34-year-old Martinez took a break from his usual training schedule to meet with media where he talked about his upcoming fight against Vasquez, his work ethic, and what he thinks of the welterweight division.

The media workout took place Tuesday from the Wild Card West Boxing Club in Santa Monica, Calif.

On what fans can expect from him on Saturday, Jan. 23…

“Hopefully Vasquez comes to fight. I’m an old school fighter so you know I’m going to bring it.  I like to put on a show for the fans that come watch me fight. I want the fans talking about me after the fight. Like I said, I’m an old school ‘Rocky’ fighter that loves to brawl. That’s what I’m about.”

On being noticed as a viable contender…

“I’m all about hard work and I believe that if you put the time in, you’re going to get your opportunity. I’ve always known I had the skills to compete with the best. I may have shocked the boxing community with my recent performances, but I didn’t shock myself. I know I belong here.”

On his split decision loss to Robert Guerrero last June and the continued buzz surrounding the controversial decision…

“It is what it is. Close decisions happen in boxing all the time and sometimes you’re on the winning side of it and sometimes you’re not. The judges saw what they thought they saw. I thought I won the fight, but it doesn’t matter at this point. In about a week, I’ll have another chance to show everyone what I’m capable of.”

Aron’s thoughts on the welterweight division…

It’s difficult to stand out as a welterweight. It’s a loaded division. The fights are always tough. I have to bring my ‘A’ game every fight and each training camp has to be better than the last. That’s just how I look at it and how I prepare.”
