VISILIA, CALIFORNIA (Sat, May 13, 2017)– Before Austin Liu headlines 559 Fights 56 on May 26 at the Visalia Convention Center in Visalia, Calif., the top West Coast prospect sat down with FightBookMMA.
How did you find MMA to begin with?
My dad was a taekwondo black belt when he was growing up, and as a kid I really loved martial arts movies. Whenever there was a fight scene in a movie, I would set the room up and pretend I’m Bruce Lee (laughs). Every move that they would do on the screen, I would emulate it. My dad saw how interested I was in martial arts, found a gym for me, and the rest is history.
Why MMA, do you think?
You know, I don’t know (laughs). There are rules, but there’s a very limited amount of rules, so it’s as close to real one-on-one combat that you can get. I like that. There are a lot of ways to win.
Being that this is your first main event fight, do you feel any additional pressure?
It’s just another fight for me, honestly. Every fight, I just break it down into simple terms — I look at them as small problems that have to be solved, then we’re on to the next.
How do you see this fight going?
This guy is mainly a wrestler. His striking isn’t very good at all. I see him shooting, but I’m going to stuff his takedowns and take him out on the feet.
What are your goals in MMA?
I want to go to the top. A lot of guys are here just to have fun — I have fun with it too, don’t get me wrong — but I’m in this to be the best. I intend to be the best.
Where would you like to be one year from today?
I would like to be in a major promotion, like the UFC or Bellator. Twelve months from today, I’ll be in a big promotion, for sure.
