CALIFORNIA (Sat, February 28, 2017)– Live from SAP center in San Jose California Bellator MMA made their return to the Shark Tank with a heavyweight main event that was one for the ages but due to a late injury to Matt Mitrione the main event was canceled. After a bunch of rumors saying there could be a late replacement, the main event was officially canceled and the new main event was the originally planned co main event a lightweight war between hometown hero Josh Thomson and Patricky Pitbull. This fight could leave the winner next in line for a crack at the champion Michael Chandler. Thomson is undefeated sense joining Bellator and Patricky is always one punch away from finding himself right back into a title fight. A lot riding on the two lightweights but these are two of MMA’s best and it will be one you won’t wanna miss. Also on the card a big heavyweight fight between the red-hot Cheick Kongo and Oli Thompson, and just like the main event the winner could find themselves next in line for the vacant heavyweight title. Brooke Mayo takes on Veta Arteaga in the flyweight division, and Josh Koscheck finally makes his Bellator debut when he takes on Mauricio Alonso. A disappointment on the main event but as Scott Coker said ‘The Show Must Go On”. A full slate of prelims before the main card kicks off, and it’s all live and free on Spike TV.
We kick things off with the prelims, and the first fight was in the bantamweight division as Roque Reyes (0-3) took on hometown hero who was making his pro debut Justin Tenedora (0-0). Into the 2nd round and Tendora earns his first pro win by submission. Winner: Justin Tendora (1-0) by Submission (Face Crank) Round 2. – Loser: Roque Reyes (0-4). Next up we head to the middleweight division were Martin Sano (4-2) took on Diego Herzog (4-2). Back and forth we went and after going the distance the card was split down the middle in the eyes of the judges. The fight was declared a majority draw. Majority Draw: Martin Sano (4-2-1) Deigo Herzog (4-2-1). Next we head to the featherweight division were a Abner Perez (0-0) took on Gaston Bolanos (0-0). Abner Perez wasted no time getting his pro career started on the right foot as he finished Bolanos in the 1st round. Winner: Abner Perez (1-0) by TKO Round 1. – Loser: Gaston Bolanos (0-1). The welterweights were up next as J.C. Llamas (8-5) took on another hometown hero James Terry (18-9). After going the distance and accidental eye poke stops the fight in the 3rd. But after two completed rounds the judges score the win for Terry. Winner: James Terry (19-9) (Accidental Eye Poke) Unanimous Decision (30-27,30-27,30-27). – Loser: J.C. Llamas (8-6). Up next a catchweight bout between Zack Andrews (3-0) and J.J. Okanovich (3-1). Its San Francisco vs San Jose. Zack Andrews does it for the city as he submitted Okanovich in the 2nd round. Winner: Zack Andrews (4-0) by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) Round 2. – Loser: J.J. Okanovich (3-2). The lightweights are up next as Cesar Gonzalez (0-1) took on Nikko Jackson (1-1). A hell of a back and forth fight but it was Nikko Jackson that was able to do enough to get the win. Winner: Nikko Jackson (2-1) by Unanimous Decision (29-28,30-27,30-27). – Loser: Cesar Gonzalez (0-2).
The main card kicks off in the welterweight division were Mauricio Alonso (0-1) takes on Josh Koscheck (17-10). Mauricio Alonso did everything he could to play spoiler as he earned the stoppage victory in the 1st round. Tough debut for Koscheck. Winner: Mauricio Alonso (1-1) by TKO Round 1. – Loser: Josh Koscheck (17-11). Next up the ladies took center stage as Veta Arteaga (2-1) took on the debuting Brooke Mayo (0-0) in the flyweight division. A great back and forth fight that showed the potential for both fighters but after Mayo’s eye flared up the doctor stepped in and stopped the fight. A horrible way to end a great fight but safety is always first. Winner: Veta Arteaga (3-1) by TKO Doctor Stoppage. – Loser: Brooke Mayo (0-1). Up next an original prelim that got bumped up to the main card in the middleweight division Anatoly Tokov (24-2) took on Francisco France (13-4). Fedor couldn’t compete tonight but he was in the corner of his upcoming star, and Tokov didn’t miss a beat. He finishes France in the 2nd round to earn the big victory. Winner: Anatoly Tokov (25-2) by TKO Round 2. – Loser: Francisco France (13-5). In the co main event a huge fight in the heavyweight division as Cheick Kongo (25-10-2) looked to keep rolling against Oli Thompson (17-9). Another stellar performance for Cheick Kongo as he takes down yet another heavyweight contender in dominating fashion. Oli never got a chance to get comfortable, and tonight Kongo was unstoppable. Winner: Cheick Kongo (26-10-2) by Unanimous Decision (30-26,30-25,30-25). – Loser: Oli Thompson (17-10).
Main Event Lightweight Division
Josh Thomson (22-8) Vs Patricky Pitbull (16-8)
The new main event featured two lightweights that are one win away from a possible title shot. Since joining Bellator Thomson is undefeated and has looked untouchable. As for Pitbull he has the power to end a fight in the blink of an eye and with that ability he is never an underdog. Pitbull is looking to bounce back after his last lost and Thomson is looking to add another name to his list of victories. All the action live from the shark tank. Into the 1st round we go were the action started off slow but as you would imagine the first big blow comes from Patricky who connects with a right hand that floors Thomson. Little damage done they get back to their feet and round 1 comes to an end. One big shot landed for Pitbull and not much offense from Thomson. Into the 2nd we go and Thomson goes in for a combo and Pitbull connects. Thomson falls gets back up eats another big one goes right back to the mat some ground and pound follows and that’s all she wrote. A dominating victory for Patricky Pitbull. Don’t think Thomson new how much power Pitbull has and the fight was over before you knew it. What a finish.
Winner: Patricky Pitbull (17-8) by TKO Round 2
Loser: Josh Thomson (22-9)
