Sunday November 8, 2015– Brooke “The Bully” Mayo is a beautiful woman, but don’t let her looks fool you. She is a Muay Thai fighter with a record of 3-0 and an amateur MMA fighter who is 5-2.
A former college soccer player for Saint Mary’s, Brooke suffered an injury that changed her course. After surgery for compartment syndrome in both calves, she decided to leave soccer behind.
“I was looking for something new to try. Someone suggested to go do Jiu Jitsu and I was hooked on it ever since. I’m the first one in my family to go try any type of martial art. I prefer MMA and Jiu Jitsu but I’m starting to fall for Muay Thai”
Although Mayo does not play soccer anymore she still involved with the sport.
“My family and the kids I coach at soccer are my biggest motivation. I really want to make them proud and I want to be a good role model for them. I not only strive to be a better fighter because of them but also a better person.”
What would you say to those who think fighters can’t be good role models?
“I would say that fighters are most of the time, also Martial Artists that care about respecting the art and their opponents. Most of the people I have met and trained with are truly great people that have great morals. Fighters are not just going into a fight trying to harm their opponent but they are looking to display the skills that they have worked on perfecting over months and years of dedicated training. I’ve seen a lot of fighters go to their opponents before or after fights and display great sportsmanship by bowing, shaking hands, or even becoming good friends. That should be something that is carried over into other sports for sure.”
Have you faced any adversity being a woman in a mostly male dominated sport?
“Yes, I definitely feel like I need to work extra hard to earn the respect of guys in the gym. I also have had people make comments about me being too “cute” to be a fighter”
Brooke has a beautiful head kick ko against Anntonette Bernal. A favorite moment which is one thing she never thought she could do.
