Monday May 5th, 2015 (Houston, TX)– FightBookMMA.com was at the Canelo Alvarez vs. James Kirkland fight covering the event. This event was presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Canelo Promotions, SMS Promotions and Leija*Battah Promotions. The fight took place Saturday, May 9 at Minute Maid Park in Houston and was sponsored by Corona Extra, Mexico – Live it to Believe it!, Fred Loya Insurance and O’Reilly Auto Parts.
A battle between both fighters was show-cased that night. More than 30,000 in attendance got their money’s worth of pure boxing entertainment. The announcer for the undercard was Ray Flores, a full-time ring announcer, play-by-play commentator for various MMA and Boxing promotions. He also is a SportsCenter Anchor for ESPN Chicago AM 1000. For the main event Micheal Buffer, a well-known ring announcer for boxing and professional wrestling matches. He is known for his trademarked catchphrase, “Let’s get ready to rumble!”
Canelo Alvarez vs. James Kirkland began as a 12-round super welterweight bout. In the first round Canelo was coming in full force. A short right hand dropped Kirkland with 1:15 left in round 1 and Kirkland was pretty much on “spaghetti legs” for the remainder of the round. In Round 2, Canelo continued to attack but after the first minute Canelo was on the defensive against the ropes, Kirkland took advantage and started firing away punches. In the 3rd round, Canelo punched Kirkland to the body that hurt him and then a devastating right hand that put Kirkland flat on his back. The fight ended since it was obvious that there was no need for a full count as the fight was waved off by referee Jon Schorle.
Bernard Hopkins stated at the Post Fight Press Conference that Kirkland had to be rushed to the hospital to be examined by the Dr’s and will have a CT Scan since he hit the canvas pretty hard and was out for a while.
At the Post Fight Press Conference, Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez both talked about who he wants to fight and what his plans are for the future.
If Miguel Cotto defeats Daniel Geale in June, it’s likely that Canelo vs. Cotto will happen.
Kirkland’s purse was $1.3M. Canelo’s purse is a percentage of the event at least $3.5M.
