FORMER LAKEWOOD GRAPPLER FACES CRITICAL PRO MMA CONTEST
(PENNSAUKEN) GPG 21 will take place July 25th, 2015 at The Event Center, 1444 Route 73, Pennsauken, N.J. Doors open at 6 p.m. The first bout starts at 7 p.m.
Matt “Razor Sharp” Rizzo, a 2005 Lakewood High School (LHS) graduate and New Jersey State wrestling champion, on July 25 will enter the fight cage in what observers say is a pivotal match in his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career.
Indeed, the fight between Rizzo, 29, and Sean “Shorty Rock” Santella, 30, of Whippany, N.J., is seen as a key contest between the very top-two 125 lb. fighters outside the UFC. Consequently, Global Proving Ground (GPG) will feature the Rizzo-Santella “super fight” as the main event of its GPG 21 “Fighting for Autism Awareness” MMA extravaganza.
The two men will compete throughout five, 5-minute championship rounds for the GPG 125 title.
“This is a business about winning,” Rizzo says on a GPG promo interview. “That’s what I’m here to do.”
Rizzo, who was inducted into the Lakewood Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014, now lives in Levittown, Pa. He represents Revolution Academy and has a 9-2 pro MMA record.
Santella, representing Ricardo Almeida BJJ and Miller Brothers MMA, is 13-5-1.
The fight also coincidentally brings together in the cage Rizzo and fellow Lakewood alumnus Steve Peacock, whose will serve as GPG 21 cage announcer.
Peacock, a 1982 LHS graduate and LHS Language Arts teacher since 2012, also is the “voice” of the LHS basketball program. This will be his sixth event as GPG announcer.
Rizzo and Peacock have never met!!
