Geane “The Revolutionary” Herrera discusses Ali Bagautinov, PEDs, and Video Games
Friday May 27, 2016— The UFC has a new Flyweight contender, ready to shake up the division. Geane ‘The Revolutionary’ Herrera’s record sits at 9-1, with his sole loss coming in his UFC debut. In his very next fight he displayed the striking technique and power that this division has been waiting for, with a beautiful second round KO of Joby Sanchez. He took that fight on seven days’ notice.
We recently got a chance to speak with Herrera regarding his upcoming bout with Ali Bagautinov, at UFC Fight Night 89: MacDonald vs. Thompson, on June 18, 2016.
So how’s training going?
“Training is going well man. It’s going better than ever before.”
I see you’ve been training at a lot of different places now. Can you tell us where you train?
“When I’m in Tampa I train my striking and MMA game with Defiant Daniel from Team DefWar, and then as far as my Jiu-Jitsu, It’s under Bill Banks, and he’s out of the Spartan Gym in Tampa. And when I’m here in Vegas, I train under Gil Martinez. I also train at Drysdale and 10th Planet in Las Vegas.”
What are you adding to your game?
“Well the guy that I’m fighting right now, he’s a wrestler, and he’s going to try to take me down and grind me down. We’re working on everything to counter it.”
What are you learning at 10th planet, specifically for Bagautinov?
“Oh yeah. I definitely see a lot of weaknesses in his whole fight game. That’s why I decided to take this fight. We really studied the guy, and we’re breaking him down. He seems to be very one-dimensional. He tries to do a little bit of the boxing but it’s not impressive.”
Where are your strengths in this matchup?
“My strength is that I am such a complete fighter. That’s my true strength. Because I’m well rounded and I’m completely different than every other fighter in this division.”
How’s the weight cut going?
“The weight cut’s going well my man. My last fight was a 7-day notice, and I was able to cut 22 pounds, you know. Right now I’m weighing around 143 and I got 3 weeks to work with.”
What do you think of the new weight cutting rules, where you have to check in at 8% of your target weight during fight week.
“Its great man. I think as professionals we kind of have to follow what the regulations are gonna make us do. I think its fair cuz you got guys doing some foul shit.”
In regards to your opponent, Ali Bagautinov, there has been a change in him since the Demetrious Johnson fight. Do you think that the lack of PEDs is the reason?
“I mean, I believe so. It’s been evident that the guy’s a cheater. He looks for every way to win. I’ve never been one of those guys. I get satisfaction out of winning when I know that I did everything that I possibly could by the book. I don’t know much about him. All I know is that he’s a cheater and he can cheat all he wants; I’m still gonna go in there and put it on him.”
Do you have a prediction for the main event on the card – Rory Macdonald, or Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson?
“Hmmm, I got Mcdonald winning, bro. He’s very well-rounded. I really feel like that the fighters that truly get somewhere are the ones that are well-rounded.”
Tell us about yourself; what do you like to do in your free time; What are your hobbies?
“When I’m in Tampa I just like to hang out with a couple of buddies of mine, play video games, go to the beach. But here in Vegas, my man, I just train and sleep, and that’s it. “
Which video games do you play?
“I play a lot of Battlefield. I never got into Call of Duty. I play a lot of Battlefield and a lot of racing games.”
That’s funny. Everybody falls on one side of that coin, either Battlefield or Call of Duty. That new trailer for the new Battlefield game looks insane, doesn’t it?
“Yeah man, I’m really looking forward to it. They always do such a great job.”
It’s such an involved game. There is so much you can explore. Not even just in the world of the game, but in what you are capable of doing as the character. It’s really impressive.
“Exactly man! You can do whatever you want in the game and that’s what I like about it.”
Let’s end on this. What are your thoughts on Trump?
“On Trump? Hahaha, that’s actually a really good question. I’m looking at his building right now, here in Vegas. I mean, it’s looking like he’s gonna be the president because I’m not gonna vote for Hillary. And I’m not gonna vote for Trump either. I just pray to God, that he’s a good president and that all this was just a scandal for him to be elected and then he calms down.”
That is a very enlightened, and positive view on the situation from a real martial artist. I’d like to thank Geane for taking the time to speak with us, and would like to wish him a very happy birthday! He turns 26 today. Good luck on June 18th!
