GPG 21: Rizzo vs Santella
When: Jul 25, 2015 7:00 PM EDT
Venue: GPG Event Center
Location: Pennsauken, New Jersey
Friday July 17, 2015– On July 25th in Pennsauken, NJ at the Event Center, fans are going to be treated to an exciting fight card loaded with talent across the board as GPG hosts 9 terrific pro MMA fights.
Here’s my preview of the fights:
Kenny Richmond vs Anthony Dill 135 lbs Richmond is making his pro debut after going an impressive 5-0 as an amateur. Dill ( Martinez BJJ) is 0-2, he got caught in an armbar in his last fight, and I thought he won his first fight that the judges scored for his opponent. Both have big hearts and are in great shape. Should be a very good contest.
Kris Gratolo vs Darren Costa 185 lbs
Gratolo is making his pro debut after finding it difficult to find anyone to fight him in the amateur ranks. He is trained by Carmello Marrero and has been rolling with very high quality fighters. The Badger is primed for this fight. Darren Costa is 1-3 but has fought some of the best competition in doing so with losses to Jose Pinto and Mike Wilcox who are both tremendous prospects themselves. This will be a war.
Jonathan Romero vs Gil Isabel HWT
Romero is making his pro debut after rumbling to a 5-1 amateur record. He trains out of Miller Brothers MMA and is well schooled in his ground game. He is one of the top HWT prospects in the area. Isabel is 0-2 after going undefeated at 4-0 as an amateur and will look to get in the win column against the uprising Romero. We may see an early finish among these 2 big boys!!
Jerermiah Wells vs Marques Worrell 185 lbs
Wells is 3-0 and has no plans of getting his first loss. Worrell is a solid 6-2 and a very exciting style fighter. Worrell should have a huge reach advantage as Wells stands at 5’8” and Worrell is 6’5”. This is an excellent matchup between 2 legitimate prospects. Great work again by match-maker, Helen Locura.
Washington daSilva vs Aaron Jeffrey 185 lbs
Dante’ Rivera brings one of his top prospects down the turnpike in daSilva (2-1). His lethal ground attack and tons of cardio will be needed to stop the 2-0 Jeffrey for the first time. Here again, we have 2 excellent athletes with winning records, doing battle. This could be fight of the night!
Joe Stripling vs Shelton Graves HWT
Stripling is a colorful fighter with a ton of personality. He also has moxie and has battled to a 8-7 record. He lives and breathes training and is always at the gym. He goes in against the “Grave Digger” Shelton Graves. Graves sports a 2-3 record with a never-say-defeat attitude. He loves to get down and dirty and we will see who gets the dirtiest at the end of this heavyweight brawl.
Sydney Outlaw vs Christian Leonard 170 lbs
Outlaw (3-1) is another of Dante Rivera’s extremely talented teammates. It has been tough for Outlaw to get a fight recently and now he goes in against one of the toughest challenges he will have faced. Leonard is 6-6 but if you look at his opponents, you will see he has challenged the best the area has had to offer. Still a youngster at 20 years old but is a very experienced and savvy fighter with a cast iron jaw. Talent on both sides of the cage make this a fight that I am drooling for. GREAT FIGHT!!!
Brylan Vanartsdalen vs Matt DiMarcantonio 145 lbs
Brylan is the savvy veteran (10-11) who grew up around the corner from the venue and expects to have a huge crowd in attendance to cheer him on. Jackson Galka and the guys over at Daddis Fight Camp will have Brylan ready for war as the Canadian, DiMarcantonio (7-5) comes south to enter enemy territory and try to bring the “W” back over the border. Vanartsdalen will have none of it and expects the decibel level to be raised like never before at the Event Center.
MAIN EVENT 5 ROUND CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT 125 LBS
Matt “Razor Sharp” Rizzo vs Sean “Shortyrock” Santella
Rizzo trains at Revolution Academy and has run his record to 9-2. He is a former NJ High School wrestling champion. His ground and pound is some of the nastiest around. Matt’s stand-up has evolved into a strength as well as he has become an excellent all-around fighter who believes he should already be in the UFC. He will fight anybody that gets in his way of his dream. Up steps Santella (13-5-1) who is the head BJJ instructor at Miller Bros. MMA, for good reason.
Sean has fought all of the toughest opponents in his weight class yet has been snubbed as far as being signed to the contract that he feels he deserves in the big dance. Sean is comfortable no matter where the fight winds up. He has tremendous submissions and will try to finish Rizzo to take home the title in the main event. This is a fight that the local fans have been clamoring for as some believe these are the 2 toughest 125 lb fighters not in the UFC. I hope Joe Silva and Dana White get to see this one because both of these guys are hard-working, talented and deserving of a chance at the next level. I just feel blessed that I get to sit cageside for this one and interview the winner.
