Happy But Hungry, Jakob Clemons Eyes Big Win in Maryville

MARYVILLE, TENNESSEE (Sun, June 18, 2017)– Before Knoxville’s Jakob Clemons returns to action at Valor Fights’ Fight Night at The Shed on June 30 in Maryville, Tenn., LIVE on FloCombat, the Apex Fights flyweight champ sat down with FightBookMMA.

If someone told you when you were growing up that you’d someday be fighting for a living, would you have believed them?

(Laughs) I think so. I was always into combat sports. I found MMA when I was about 10, and I put it in my mind that that was something I wanted to do. Before that, I was drawn to pro wrestling. I’ve always kind of been drawn to anything related to combat. I’d believe them, yes.

You’re 4-1 as an amateur MMA fighter with four straight wins, and 6-0 as a kickboxer. How do you feel about what you’ve accomplished so far?

I feel pretty good about it. I’m only 22 and I feel like I’ve accomplished a bit already. But I’m still very hungry. I’ll be hungry until I get my first paycheck from the UFC (laughs). I’m happy but hungry.

How excited are you for June 30?

I’m definitely excited. I was looking forward to doing the UMMAF tournament but was bummed when I couldn’t. Being that this card is in Maryville, which is pretty close to home, I’m excited to weigh in and sleep in my own bed. Hotel beds kinda suck (laughs).

Do you expect to have a lot of supporters in attendance?

I’m hoping so. A lot of people talk about how much they want to see me fight, but they don’t necessarily want to drive several hours to watch it, which I understand. But Maryville is right down the street. It will be cool to have some of my friends and family there.

After this fight, will you be turning pro?

It really depends on how things go. I trust my coaches entirely. If they think it’s time, it will be time. If not — if they think there’s still stuff that I have to improve on — I trust their judgement too. We’ll see what they say and go from there. Either way, I’m excited.
