MMA icons Wanderlei Silva and Frankie Edgar witness historical Brave 9 public weigh-in
The Khalifa Sports City Arena was the stage for another historical milestone for Brave Combat Federation. On the eve of Brave 9: The Kingdom of Champions, the 15 fighters involved in the groundbreaking event tipped the scales in front of fans and MMA royalty as the likes of Coach John Kavanagh, Darren Till, Ilir Latifi, former Pride champion Wanderlei Silva and former UFC titleholder Frankie Edgar were in attendance to lend their support to the show.
After Lucas Mineiro’s withdrawal due to illness, the card lost one fight but the athletes seemed even more fired up for the Friday event. There were several tense moments during the staredowns, with Mohammad Fakhreddine shoving his opponent Tahar Hadbi, when he tried to push the Algeria flag on his face during their last encounter before fight night.
Another tense moment came when Carl Booth and Jarrah Al-Selawe faced off. After almost coming to blows at the Open Workouts, both fighters continued to trash talk each other, until The Bomber had enough. The Englishman pushed his rival, putting his hands on Al-Selawe’s chest. Their rematch is sure to be another hot contest.
Finally, both title fights were confirmed, as Gurdarshan Mangat and Stephen Loman tipped the scales at 134.7 lbs and 134.4 lbs, well below the championship limit of 135 lbs for their inaugural Bantamweight title bout. In the main event, Alejandro “Pato” Martínez (153.3 lbs) and Ottman “The Bulldozer” Azaitar (153.8 lbs) also made weight with ease and confirmed their Lightweight title fight.
Brave 9: The Kingdom of Champions marks the promotion’s return to Bahrain after a year. During 2017, the organization has put on groundbreaking events in countries such as Brazil (twice), Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, India, and Kazakhstan. Brave 9 will be the culmination of the International Combat Week, alongside the IMMAF World Championships, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
