Sunday March 13, 2016— Prestige FC (Prestige Fight Club MMA) crowned its first two champions on Saturday night in a pair of action-packed bouts before a raucous full-house crowd at inside the George Reed Auditorium at The Orr Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Nick “Nyquil” Rhoads (9-2) capped Prestige FC 2: Queen City Coronation SUBWAY® Restaurants and 104.9 The Wolf in a terrifically wild main event as he claimed the featherweight title by notching a technical submission victory over Kurt “The Hurt” Southern (14-7). The Tucson, Arizona, product rendered the fan favorite unconscious in the middle of the cage with a D’Arce choke at 49 seconds of Round 3.
The two engaged in an all-out slugfest right from get-go with Southern coming away from one exchange with a cut under his left eye. Despite the wound, Southern came back to blast Rhoads with a barrage of strikes from fists and knees.
The wild striking exchanges continued through the second round, and then Southern jumped into guard and went for guillotine choke but Rhoads showed his resiliency by toughing out the submission attempt and eventually escaping. In the third, Rhoads scored a takedown and positioned himself perfectly to slap on the finish. Referee Jerin Valel called a halt to the fight immediately after Southern went limp.
In the other title matchup, Regina’s own Charmaine “Not So Sweet” Tweet (8-6) used an array of submission attempts to pick up enough points to take home the featherweight crown via a five-round unanimous decision over Jessy Miele. Miele (5-3), who fights out of Prospect, Connecticut, got in her fair share of solid lefts but Tweet’s ground game was too much throughout the affair, and the judges gave her a clean sweep by scores of 50-44, 49-45, and 49-45.
A hotly anticipated clash between two high-end bantamweight prospects had an unfortunate ending. Tristar product Aiemann Zahabi (6-0), the younger brother of renowned coach Firas Zahabi, picked up a TKO win at 2:17 of the first round when opponent Kyle Oliveira (3-2) suffered a knee injury trying to avoid a snap kick.
Hometown hero Sean Quinn didn’t disappoint his massive throng of supporters as he secured a victory by rear-naked choke at 3:11 of the first round against Chris Day (3-3). The win was particularly sweet for Quinn as it came in his return to action after more than two years of battling back from injuries.
Nick Campbell (8-7) opened the live broadcast on The Fight Network by blasting Dan Amyotte (3-3) with a knees and strikes to pick up a TKO verdict at 1:04 of Round 1. For his efforts, Campbell, who fights out of Calgary, Alberta, earned the Knockout of the Night bonus.
A pair of middleweight fights rounded out the main card. West Virginia’s Keith “The Banana” Smetana (11-6) called his shot prior to his bout with Devon “Mr. Boomtruck” Smith (3-2), predicting a first-round win by submission, and he got it at the 1:52 mark via rear-naked choke. In other 185-pound division tilt, Mariusz “The Iron Pol” Ksiazkiewicz (5-0) avoided several submission attempts from Micah Brakefield and then unleashed a furious ground-and-pound assault late in the second round. Brakefield (7-7) was clearly woozy and ultimately didn’t answer the bell for the third round, giving Ksiazkiewicz the TKO victory.
