RAPID FIRE: 10 QUESTIONS WITH CONFLICT 23 FIGHTER ISRAEL MENDOZA
By: R Eric Ellison
Conflict MMA invades another Low Country city with great MMA action, as it sets its sights on Hardeeville, SC for it’s next Fight Club event! The South Carolina promotion is set to touch down in Hardeeville to put another great city under its’ banner on December 6th, and looking to close out a record breaking year with a bang!
The card itself is stacked with exciting up-and-coming ammys, as well as title fights you just cannot miss. Yet another classic and balanced card from the Southeastern giants. Josh Collins Vs Allen Lawyer, set to originally take place at the last Havoc event in Savannah, has been announced for the 185 title. With Conflict champ Bart Weeks sidelined, Zac Cooper and Johnnie Williams will battle for the 145 interim title. Other great Conflict warriors return to the cage, such as Robbie Collum, CJ Davis, Cavin Sunkins, Karlton Budd and more.
Today we sit down with one of those ammy prospects, Israel Mendoza. Taking on Georgia’s own Jason Screen, Mendoza plans to make his Fight Club debut nothing short of stunning. Carrying with him that burning hunger that is so unique within fighters new to the sport, Mendoza is confident his debut year will end with a bang. With ten questions in hand, we caught up with Mendoza just before the holidays, and mere days from Fight Week!
Join us today for another fantastic Conflict 23 interview, and we will see you December 6th in Hardeeville!
R Eric Ellison: Thank you so much for taking time to chat with us today Israel. The first question I have to ask is, what’s it like be coming over to join the Fight Club Series?
Israel Mendoza: It’s great! Looking forward to all the opportunities ahead, and this Fight Club Series card looks awesome!
Heading back to the cage again, what has 2014 meant for you as an emerging ammy?
This year has meant a lot to me. I made my debut as an ammy and was finally able to show people that I can accomplish whatever I set my mind to.
What lead you to competing inside the cage?
You know, I’m still trying to figure it out myself. I just know deep down that there is a reason for me to step in that cage!
What did you learn about yourself in your last two fights that you’re bringing in with you on Dec 6th?
In my last two fights I was really angry and aggressive, but not the right type ofaggression. People did not know know, but during those two fights I was dealing with some personal problems. I believe all that anger and agression came out wrong and caused me to make some mistakes! Now all that is in the past, and I have an open mind about being my best. I’m eager to set foot inside that cage!
So, is there anything you’re looking to prove, test, or challenge yourself with in particular on December 6th in Hardeeville?
I just want to showcase all of my skills where ever the fight goes. I want show how good I am, and that every fight I will be better than the last one!
Can you tell us a little about your team and where you train?
I am a part of BodyQuest MMA! There I started my MMA training last year from basically nothing. I didn’t even know how to defend myself! I was built from the start by learning from current fighters like Allen Greenway, Ashley Greenway, Dylan Cala, Brandon Barrett and many others.
Your opponent Jason Screen has had a solid 2014 as well. What are some of your biggest motivators when preparing for fight night?
When getting ready for a fight I think of all those people who said I’m no good or that I’m going to get my ass kicked. I also think of my teammates who encourage me to be the best I can be, and the friends who support me!
With so many people hitting Hardeeville for Conflicts debut there, if you could leave one impression on all these fans on fight night, what would you want it to be?
If I could leave any impression, I’d like for everyone there to know I’m a hard worker and that I will never give up! That if Jason takes me down I will work as hard as I can to get back up! There’s no quit in me.
As always, we would love to hear about anybody or any sponsors helping you get ready for this one.
Everyone at BodyQuest and the great people involved. They sponsored me!
Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us about this epic battle headed our way. Last question; if you could spend a week training with any fighter in the world, who would it be?
I would choose Donald Cerrone, because he is one of the best Muay Thai kickboxers in the world!
