Although former UFC light-heavyweight champ Rashad Evans is in Istanbul to corner his friend and training partner Tyrone Spong during the Glory 15 tournament, he still found the time to discuss the UFC 172 main event between Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira.
Evans, a former training partner of Jones’ at Jackson’s MMA, believes that the match-up is suited to Jones’ strengths, particularly his speed and movement, while Teixeira will be relying simply on his punching power.
“I think Jones will get him. I think this fight kind of resembles the Rampage and Jones fight.” Evans told John Joe O’Regan of Bloodyelbow.com. “You know that Teixeira is a big puncher with a lot of experience but he doesn’t have one crucial element and this is good movement. He doesn’t have the good movement that he would need to bring problems to Jones. I think Jones will win by being quick, being able to get out and get in, strike and get out of the way. “
Divulging into further detail, Evans explained that Teixeira’s last fight against Bader exposed him for his lack of movement and balance, something he can expect Jones to take advantage of in the fight. He also suggested that Jones would approach this fight with a ‘lot more focus’ following his close fight with Gustafsson last year.
