Remembering Kimbo Slice and the impact he had in MMA
(Mon, March 6, 2017)– It’s been almost a year since the tragic death of one of the most beloved fighters in our current generation. Kimbo Slice has never been looked at as a top-ranked fighter or a serious contender, but the passion he had for the sport of fighting and the lengths he would go just to entertain his fans is something we all look back on. From his wacky internet street fights to his controversial professional MMA career, there’s no doubt that Slice has left a mark in the MMA world that not only hardcore fans remember, but casuals as well.
Kimbo Slice didn’t need to compete in the UFC or become champion in order to become one the most popular fighters in our generation. It was the love he had for the the sport of MMA that made him become popular among many fans from his outlandish street fights he would post on the internet for the world to see. From the publicity he was getting, he went on to make several appearances in movies and was even able to secure a spot as a contestant for The Ultimate Fighter TV show. As Slice was offered to join the UFC promotion, he didn’t have much success as he was released from the company after one fight against fellow Ultimate Fighter alumni, Matt Mitrione. However, that didn’t stop him from not only appearing in more films, but also pursue a career in boxing; which he was able to rack up a seven-win undefeated record.
Despite only 42 years of age, Slice unfortunately passed away from heart failure. MMA fans alike mourned for the tragic news that occurred, realizing how much he really meant to the sport of MMA, not just being looked at as a common “street fight.” However, the legacy of Kimbo Slice will live on forever as he will always be looked at as one of the most beloved fighters of all-time. Rest in peace, Kimbo.
