Ricky Simon talks LFA title shot, UFC aspirations
Before top prospect Ricky Simon fights for the LFA title on Dec. 15 at LFA 29, LIVE on AXS TV Fights, the red-hot bantamweight contender sat down with FightBookMMA.
What are your thoughts on signing with LFA, one of the biggest regional organizations in America, and what does this mean for your career?
LFA is one of those promotions I’ve wanted to fight for – I just haven’t had the opportunity. It’s one of the bigger promotions and it’s a great feeder into the big show. I’ve really wanted to fight for them and I’m glad to have the opportunity now. I’m honored that my first fight is for the title. Having a three-fight deal makes it much easier for me as well. I don’t have to scrounge and take short-notice fights. This is the first fight in a long time that I’ve had an actual camp for. It’s been about four or five fights since I’ve had a full camp. I’m really excited to see what’s to come with LFA.
Will this be your first fight on AXS TV?
I believe so. I believe this is my first fight that’ll be live on AXS TV. I’m excited – I see a lot of LFA and RFA fights playing at the gym, so I’m really excited to get that level of exposure.
Do you think it’ll take one fight to get to the UFC or more?
It’s hard to say. I’ve thought a few times that I was close. But at this point, I have to be close – especially coming off of this last fight and the big win on The Contender series. Obviously, fighting for the LFA title against a former UFC fighter – a veteran. He’s on a four or five win streak, so he’s on the cusp of getting back in. I’m right there, getting in for the first time. I figure that either of us has a chance to make it in after this fight.
What don’t fans know about you yet?
I always struggle with these questions. Most of what I do is for fighting – I train six days out of the week. I’m a pretty big nerd – I like to read and play video games. I have four brothers and a sister – they all play video games and train with me, so we all nerd out when a new game comes out. Besides being super-active in the gym, I kind of like to be lazy between training sessions – read, watch movies, and play video games. I guess I’m pretty boring in that sense.
Where would you like to be twelve months from now?
I’ve tried to make 2017 a different year for me. I’ve wanted to stay active and I’ve had three fights and three wins, so far. I keep saying, “I want one more fight this year and I’ll get signed to the UFC,” I really feel I just need to win this fight and I’ll be signed to the UFC. If I win this fight, I think I’ll be signed to the UFC. So, twelve months from now, I’d like to have some fights in the UFC.
