This past Saturday night School of Hard Knocks promotion brought us Havoc in Hobbs live from Hobbs NM. Lead by Isidro Castillo and Eric Gutierrez, this show was everything a fight fan could ask for. From the very first bell to the final arm raised, it was nothing but non stop action.
Kicking off the night we had Grind MMA fighter Aric Mercado taking on mma newcomer Daniel Arriaga. Aric Mercado really showed his experience and poise in this fight ultimately taking control and securing a armbar in 2:30 of the very first round. Improving his record to 2-0.
Our second fight of the night brought us some heavyweight action as mma newcomer Lee Anthony Estrella from Amarillo Tx took on 0-1 Chris Finch from Midland Tx. This fight had some good exchanges both standing and on the ground. However it ended between rounds 2 and 3 with Finch no longer able to continue giving Estrella his first mma victory putting him at 1-0.
Our third bout of the evening was an absolute WAR!!!! Undefeated 3-0 Ricky Morales from El Paso Tx (representing UFC Gym El Paso) took on Perez Fighting System stand out 4-3 Sterling Peak from Belen NM. Morales came out strong after a big slam from Peak and almost secured a guillotine choke towards the end of the first round. Peak with pure determination came out like a man on fire for the second and truly showed his determination. Catching Morales with a fury of heavy unanswered strikes leading to a standing TKO victory in :59 of the second round. Knocking Morales from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Of course you can’t have fight night without some controversy. That’s exactly what we got with the fourth fight of the night as 2-2 Jimmy Meza from Odessa Tx took on undefeated 2-0 Matt Adcock from Lubbock Tx. First round was very back and forth with Meza catching Adcock with some good punches and Adcock landing two takedowns and controlling the action on the ground. Round two Meza caught Adcock with some more nice punches and knees from the clinch and landing a takedown of his own securing the second round as his own. As the third began it could truly be anyone’s fight. Adcock came out and delivered a beautiful turning back kick and punches before sending Meza to SUPLEX CITY showing that the third round was his. Both fighters were fairly confident that the fight was theirs and while Meza got awarded the victory some felt the fight belonged to Adcock. As fight fans we can only hope for a rematch but show nothing but respect to these two men as they poured their hearts out in what was the promotions Fight of the Night.
The fifth fight was extremely quick as 4-5 Isaac Sifuentez from Dimmit Tx took on undefeated 4-0 Jake Wilkerson from Japan. Sifuentez came out blazing but was quickly caught by Wilkerson in a guillotine choke, ending the fight in just 12 seconds into the first round.
The sixth fight of the night was the amateur main event before the pro fights began. Undefeated 4-0 Tedrick Macklin from Midland Tx took on 4-2 Nathaniel Abril from Lubbock Tx in what on paper looked like a classic striker vs grappler matchup. After a good slam Abril appeared to may have rocked himself on the landing ultimately leading to Macklin securing a RNC in just 40 seconds of the first round.
The seventh fight of the night was our first pro fight and co main event of the evening. 7-9 Gene Perez from Belen Nm took on 2-2-1 Ben Vasquez from Amarillo Tx. After a wild exchange Perez catches Vasquez in a nasty armbar in 1:04 of round one taking another belt back to the Perez Fighting System.
In our main event of the evening we had hometown hero 1-1 Joe Hurst taking on 3-1 John Romero from El Paso. Hurst took control of the fight very quickly taking the fight to the ground securing mount and landing some BRUTAL ground and pound finishing the fight in 2:25 of round one.
Havoc in Hobbs was incredible to say the least. School of Hard Knocks continues to be one of the best promotions in the area and will hopefully bring some action to Texas very soon. For all the fighters we send our upmost respect and gratitude. You guys put on one hell of a show and without y’all we wouldn’t have these amazing events!!!!
Til next time fight fans.
