Time to Pay Attention to the Heavyweight Division
Wednesday August 26, 2015– One of the biggest fights in the UFC Heavyweight division was Cain Velasquez vs Brock Lesner back in October of 2010 (UFC 121). With that win, Cain changed what it took to become the heavyweight champion, making cardio a huge key for success. That was until he faced Junior Dos Santos and an over the top right hand linked the two in a heavyweight trilogy. After three fights between the two, it would be Cain Velasquez who walked away the better man, and it was then that the division began to suffer.
After the third fight between the two we didn’t see Cain Velasquez in action for almost two years due to injuries he suffered during his training camps. Without a champion there is no reason to showcase a division. With very little change is the standings and no one able to earn the chance to face “the baddest man on the planet,” one of the UFC’s most exciting divisions was left stagnant. Recent changes however, might give MMA fans a reason to regain interest in the division full of highlight reel knock outs. Fabrico Werdum is now the division champion and fans will see fights we haven’t seen before, and some they might not mind seeing again.
Recently the UFC has announced a few heavyweight fights that should make every MMA fan thirsty for KO’s. The first of these is a match up of old school heavyweights as Frank Mir will face off against Andrei Arlovski. Both men are coming off impressive wins and can easily earn a title shot with a victory at UFC 191. The second is Junior Dos Santos vs Alistair Overeem, a fight that has been years in the making will take place at UFC on FOX 17 in December (more about that matchup here). And finally, the match that would decide who the man at top of the division would be, as Cain Velasquez gets a chance to regain the heavyweight title when he faces Fabricio Werdum at a T.B.A time and venue.
With at least two of these fights taking place before year’s end, it is a good time to be a fan of the hardest hitting division in the UFC. No matter who the winners of these match ups is, a matchup between any of these six heavyweights is worthy of main event status.
