Two Welterweight Fights That Makes Sense
(Mon, March 6, 2017)– And still, after the main event at UFC 209, Tyron Woodley remains the UFC Welterweight. While most fans (and even UFC President Dana White) believe that Stephen “Wonder Boy” Thompson should be the new champion the judges have rendered their decision and the division needs to move forward. These are the two fights that make sense and should happen.
Robbie Lawler vs Stephen Thompson
Before Tyron Woodley shocked the division with a first round defeat of former Champion Robbie Lawler, This is the fight that was suppose to happen. In fact Stephen Thompson stated that he wanted to face Lawler instead of Woodley which the champ took as a slap in face. But now that Thompson has lost to Woodley twice, he will need to stay active amongst the best in the division.
This fight would be great for the division and one MMA Fans would want to see. Robbie Lawler, who has been in wars inside the octagon is a fan favorite for his KO power and ability to take punishment in order to dish it out. The style of “WB” Thompson would make for another chess match that is sure to keep fans watching with anticipation for a fight of the night KO.
Tyron Woodley vs Demian Maia
Tyron Woodley has not had an easy road to the top. One of the biggest reasons for that is the talent stacked division he is still the champion of. Moving forward will not be any easier as the only opponent that makes sense at this point is Demian Maia.
Maia is on a 6 fight win streak, with his last victory being over former intern champion Carlos Condit and is currently ranked #3 in the world.
A fight between Woodley and Maia would be a grappling match for the ages, pinning Woodley’s collegiate wrestling against Maia’s world class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We have seen Maia win multiple P.O.N bonuses with his BJJ and while it hasn’t been on display too much during his last three fights, Woodley’s wrestling is almost as dangerous as the power in his hands.
Those two fights alone would make for an excellent card and would put the Welterweight division back in the spot light (where it belongs) and that still leaves talent like Neil Magney and Jorge Masvidal to keep things interesting.
