LAS VEGAS (Sunday December 13, 2015)– Live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, The UFC finally put on the biggest featherweight title fight of all time. After Aldo dropped out of UFC189 due to injury Connor became the interim featherweight champion. When that fight was over and McGregor got his hand raised, everyone knew what was going to happen next. The rematch was made, and now the time has passed and tonight was the night. Two bitter enemies fought for the undisputed championship. In the co main event, the best middleweight fighter in the world Chris Weidman defended his title against the #1 contender Luke Rockhold. Rockhold said that he was the man for the job to dethrone Weidman, but with Weidman on his mission to become the best fighter in the world, wouldn’t let Rockhold stand in his way. The middleweight division wasn’t done yet as the potential next opponent for the winner of Weidman and Rockhold would square off. After the fight being canceled a few times in the past due to injury, Jacare Souza and Yoel Romero fought the fight we all have been itching to see. Two of the best talents in the world left it all in the octagon knowing what was on the line. Also with Frankie Edgar finishing Chad Mendes last night and possibly becoming next in line to face the winner of McGregor and Aldo, the winner of the surging Max Holloway and Jeremy Stephens fight would have something to say about that. Also the return of the California Kid Urijah Faber, and a full line up of prelims bouts. The UFC fans have waited for this card and the time is now.
LET’S GET THINGS STARTED!!!!
The 1st prelims to get things kicked off was in the Welterweight division as Court McGee (17-4) took on Marcio Alexandre Junior (13-2), after three rounds McGee gets the unanimous decision victory. Next up in the lightweight division John Makdessi (12-4) took on Yancy Medeiros (11-3), after three rounds the winner by split decision Yancy Medeiros. Next up we stay in the lightweight division as Joe Proctor (11-3) took on Magomed Mustafaev (12-1), a TKO victory for Magomed Mustafaev in the 1st round sealed it. Next up on the prelim portion of the card we stay in the lightweight division as Kevin Lee (11-1) took on Leonardo Santos (14-4-1), in the 1st round Santos catches Lee and finishes it off with some ground and pound. A TKO victory for Leonardo Santos. Next up in the welterweight division as Warlley Alves (10-0) put his undefeated streak on the line against another undefeated fighter Colby Covington (8-0), the winner and still undefeated Warlley Alves with a 1st round submission finish. Next up in the women’s strawweight division Tecia Torres (6-0) took on Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger (6-1), after going three rounds, the winner and still undefeated Tecia Torres. Next up in the bantamweight division it’s the prelim headliner as #4 ranked fighter Urijah Faber (32-8) took on Frankie Saenz (11-2), after three rounds the winner by unanimous decision The California Kid Urijah Faber. The Main Card kicked off with another top featherweight that could also be mentioned for a future title shot #5 Max Holloway (14-3) took on #8 Jeremy Stephens (24-11), after three rounds of both fighters going back and forth, the winner by unanimous decision Max Holloway. That’s eight straight for the Hawaiian, and with this win he could be in line for a title shot. Next up in the welterweight division #6 Demian Maia (21-6) took on #12 Gunnar Nelson (14-1-1), After three rounds the winner by unanimous decision Demian Maia. A dominate performance for one of the best Brazilian jujitsu fighters in the world. Nelson put up a good fight showed a lot of heart but just didn’t have enough. Next up a shot at the middleweight title is on the line as #3 Yoel Romero (10-1) took on #2 Jacare Souza (22-3), after going the distance and a lot of back and forth the winner by split decision The Soldier of God Yoel Romero. A hell of a fight the 1st round was all Romero, the 2nd round was a toss-up and the 3rd round was all Jacare, but at the end the winner is Romero a big win in the middle division.
Co Main Event Undisputed Middleweight Championship
C. Chris Weidman (13-0) Vs #1 Luke Rockhold (14-2)
The co main event of the evening is for the undisputed middleweight championship of the world. Champion Chris Weidman has stated that his mission is not to just be the champion, but to be the best of all time. After beating all the legends of the sport he now faces the toughest challenge of his career. Luke Rockhold fought his way to this fight, with key victories to get him to the #1 contender spot. Two American warriors walked in one will walk out champion. The 1st round starts off with both fighters showing respect, Luke and Chris start with leg kicks. Weidman quickly jumps on Weidman’s back and tries for a submission. Luke breaks out and goes into the clinch. Weidman gets the takedown and continues to put on pressure. Rockhold lands a guillotine but can’t fully lock it in and they get stood up. Rockhold throws three hard leg kicks and Weidman capitalizes with a takedown which Luke counters out of to finish off round one. A lot of back and forth through the 1st round really even in my eyes. The 2nd round begins with Luke landing an early right hand that stuns Weidman but the champion brushes it off. The round wears on and both fighters exchange shots, both guys taking their time not trying to wear out. Rockhold landing some mean kicks to the body. Weidman lands a big leg kick that hurts Luke but the 2nd round comes to an end. Little less action in that round think it was a toss-up for either fighter. The 3rd round begins with the exchanging of leg kicks followed by a clinch. Weidman throws and lands a right hand that leads to a take down. Rockhold back to his feet starting to show some wear. Weidman goes for a crazy spin kick that leads to a Rockhold take down. Luke has the champion in full mount and let the ground and pound begin. Rockhold bust the champion wide open for a good minute and no stoppage as the round comes to an end. The 4th round begins with Weidman still shaken up, Luke continues to attack and wear down the champion. Luke lands the takedown and more ground and pound could be on the way. Luke pounds and pounds away on the champion. Luke dropping elbows on Weidman, just straight wearing the champion down and that’s it the stop comes and it is all over. The new undisputed middleweight champion of the world Luke Rockhold. The fight was pretty up in the air till Luke capitalized on the spin wheel kick. Weidman was a dominating champion but there’s a new sheriff in town and he deserved it Luke Rockhold.
Main Event Undisputed Featherweight Championship
C. Jose Aldo (25-1) Vs IC. Connor McGregor (18-2)
Connor Vs Jose enough said. Two men that hate each other finally got the chance to tear the house down and that they did. Only one can leave as undisputed champion. Will Connor back it up, or will Jose shut McGregor’s mouth once and for all. The 1st round begins with both fighters exchanging jabs and Connor clips the champion and that’s it. The winner and new undisputed Champion of the world Connor McGregor. A One punch KO for the new champion. WOW didn’t think anyone saw this coming. Connor called his shot and made it happen. Congrats to the new champion Connor McGregor.
At the end of the night no one expected they would see this. Two new champions in the same night. What a way to finish the PPV 2016 portion of the schedule. There are some new champions and some new contenders that are in line for these new champions. We all can’t wait to see what happens next. Congrats to the new champions Luke Rockhold and Connor McGregor.
