UFC 197: Jones vs. Saint Preux Recap & Official Results

Saturday April 23, 2016– Live from the MGM in Las Vegas the return of the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world returned to take back the title he never lost. His opponent was originally supposed to be the current champion but due to injury the champ had to step out and a new challenger stepped up to the plate. Jon Jones and Ovince Saint Preux were set to collide for the interim light heavyweight title of the world, the winner of this fight will be interim champion and will go on to face the current champion Daniel Cormier when he is healthy and ready to go. Jones was suspended and stripped of his title last year due to his sobriety and troubles with the law, a year later the former champion is reinstated and sober and wants to take back the title he never lost. Saint Preux is one of the up and coming fighters in the division and when the opportunity came for him to take the next step he didn’t hesitate to take the fight. The 2nd title fight of the night is the flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson defending his title against #2 ranked and gold metal Olympian Henry Cejudo. Johnson has defended his title countless time and hasn’t gotten close to being dethroned but with the undefeated gold medalist Cejudo stepping up to the plate Mighty Mouse will have his hands full. Former lightweight champion Anthony Showtime Pettis takes on Edson Barboza and former strawweight champion Carla Esparza makes her return to the octagon. All that and a full slate of prelims to kick things off.

LET’S GET THINGS STARTED!!!

First prelim to kick things off on UFC Fightpass is in the lightweight division as Efrain Escudero (25-11) took on Kevin Lee (12-2), after going the distance in a very close fight the winner by unanimous decision Kevin Lee. Next up in the light heavyweight division Marcos Rogerio De lima (14-4-1) took on Clint Hester (11-6), in the 1st round Marcos Rogerio De Lima gets the submission victory by way of arm triangle choke. Next in the featured prelim bout on UFC Fightpass, the heavyweights collide as Walt Harris (8-4) took on Cody East (12-2), in the 1st round Walt Harris gets the TKO finish. Cody East UFC debut didn’t go the way he wanted to but good heart was shown by East. The prelims switch over to FS1 and the lightweights kick things off as Glaico Franca (14-4) took on James Vick (9-0), a good back and forth fight but after going the distance the winner the winner by unanimous decision and still undefeated James Vick. Next in the women’s strawweight division former champion Carla Esparza (12-3) took on Juliana Lima (8-3), after going the distance of a one-sided fight the winner by unanimous decision Carla Esparza.

Next in the welterweight division young upcoming star Danny Roberts (13-1) took on Dominique Steele (14-7), after going the distance in a back and forth war the winner by unanimous decision Danny Roberts. In the featured prelim bout, the flyweights took center stage as Sergio Pettis (14-2) took on Chris Kelades (9-3), after going back and forth the winner by unanimous decision Sergio Pettis. The main card kicks off in the featherweight division as Yair Rodriguez (8-1) took on Andre Fili (15-4), in the 2nd round a beautiful flying shin catches Fili and the winner by KO Yair Rodriguez. Next up a middleweight war between Robert Whittaker (17-4) and Rafael Natal (21-7-1), a back and forth battle, Whittaker leg looks chewed up and Natal took a beating but after going the distance the winner by unanimous decision Robert Whittaker. Next up in the lightweight division former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis (18-5) took on Edson Barboza (17-4), after going the distance the winner by unanimous decision Edson Barboza. Edson Baboza destroyed Pettis leg with his kicks and that really set the tone. Pettis couldn’t get comfortable from the beginning and never had a chance to execute his moves.

Co Main Event World Flyweight Title
C. Demetrious Johnson (24-3-1) Vs #3 Henry Cejudo (10-1)

The co main event was for the Fly weight title of the world. Mighty Mouse Demetrious Johnson may be the best fighter on the planet and everyone who has stepped in his way he has conquered. Henry Cejudo knows what it takes to win gold and being undefeated, his first crack at UFC gold will be a thriller. Two flyweight warriors set to tear it down. The 1st round starts out with both fighters moving at 1000 mph, Cejudo get the early takedown but Johnson makes his way back to his feet. Johnsons working Cejudo in the clench hitting some hard Knees that has the challenger shook. Cejudo continues the heavy knees that has Cejudo down and shook. And that is all she wrote. Demetrious Johnson wins by TKO. Mighty Mouse was moving as fast as ever landing all the knees he through and Cejudo never had a chance. #AndStill your flyweight champion of the world Mighty Mouse Demetrious Johnson.

Main Event Interim Light Heavyweight Title
#1 Jon Jones (21-1) Vs #6 Ovince Saint Preux (19-7)

The main event featured the former champion who did everything he had to do to get back into the octagon, and a challenger that busted his ass to get a chance at a title shot. Jon Jones never lost his title, OSP wants to make sure he doesn’t get overlooked. The winner will not only be crowned the Interim champion but will go on to face champion Daniel Cormier to combine the belts. A true David Vs Goliath. The 1st round starts out with both fighters feeling each other out, Jones throws and lands a spinning back kick. The fight slows down Jones lands another back kick to the body. Jones lands a jump kick to the body, Bones is being the aggressor early. 1st round comes to and end with OSP landing a straight jab followed by Jones landing another Knee. Little action in the 1st round but Jones was the aggressor through 1 and should have the edge. The 2nd begins OSP throws a kick that Jones catches and OSP throws a fury of punches to respond. Jones keeping the octagon closed keeping OSP close. Jones gets into the clinch and lands some Knees and elbows. OSP responds with a good right hand. Jones keeps going with the oblique kicks that are all landing. Jones lands a big spin kick to the body and OSP is starting to wear down. The 2nd comes to an end with Jones landing a jumping spin kick and OSP responds with another jab that lands. Through two rounds Jones has been the aggressor and is in the lead. OSP needs to stay calm and try not to wear himself out. The 3rd round begins with OSP opens up with some nice combos that land, Bones throws and misses the spinning elbow. Not a lot of action at the mid way point of the fight. Jones continues to work the body and the leg with his kicks. Every time OSP comes in with a shot Jones responds with 4 more. The 3rd round comes to an end and Jones continues to execute and break down OSP. The 4th round begins with OSP throwing some volume but as he gets comfortable Jones works his into the clench. In the clench Jones takedown OSP but the takedown didn’t last long as OSP worked his way right back up to his feet. Jones begins to push the action back into the clench and another takedown successfully executed by bones. Jones works OSP in side control landings some big elbows. OSP makes his way out and gets took right back down. OSP gives up his back and Jones is laying it down elbows and mean leg kicks. Through 4 rounds Jones is in the lead and OSP need to come all out in the 5th round. The final round begins with Jones continuing his game by throwing and landing kicks. Jones gets OSP right where he wants him and lands a huge takedown that hurt OSP. They get back to the feet and Jones is back into the clench. Jones throws elbow after elbow as the fight comes to an end. The Fight comes to an end and its very clear that OSP is hurt. After going the distance the winner by unanimous decision #AndNew interim light heavyweight champion of the world Jon Jones. Jones looked rusty but overall got the job done. OSP fought hard but was overmatched in the end.

At the end of the night A champion retained his title and a new interim champion is one step closer to getting a chance to fight for the title that he never lost.
