UFC 229 The Aftermath- What We Know & Reaction

So where do we start, After what had proven to be a great event with the likes of  Tony Ferguson v Showtime fight, the Derrick Lewis KO we were on course for another great night.

When Khabib & Conor made their ways to the cage we were ready, we were at the edge of our seat,  we wanted a fight, a blood bath,  Little did we know then that the actions of Khabib and his teammates have marred the sport and the UFC 229 card

For those of you that haven’t seen any of the footage here it is:

I can not sit here and say one is right and the other is not, both were a bad mark on the sport and on the fighters.  I just don’t know where the UFC thought this would go,  The lead up to this fight was personal and what happened in NY was simply unacceptable. The UFC used this footage to promote the fight , but last night might showed this too was wrong

Dana white talked to ESPN and said:

“Three members of Nurmagomedov’s team involved in the incident were arrested and released late Saturday night. White said McGregor told him that he would not press charges.”

“The Nevada State Athletic Commission is withholding Nurmagomedov’s check pending an investigation but that McGregor was paid after the commission reviewed tape, interviewed McGregor and concluded there was no reason to withhold his check”

“It’s bad,” White said of the melee. “There’s gonna be an investigation by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and … there’s gonna be big-money fines, and these guys are in big trouble.”

“Again, we need to see how this plays out. Nobody has ever done that; nobody should ever do that.”

Everyone likes a heated rivalry but what I used to love about the sport is when the fight ends respect is shown by both fighters.

Look at both Nate Diaz & Conor McGregor for example.  Men who could take the mental warfare and come out the other side, win or loss.

As of now all we know is, Khabib’s guaranteed pay is being withheld by the Nevada Athletic Commission, pending a “full investigation,” executive director Bob Bennett confirmed with MMA Fighting early Sunday morning.

Once the investigation is completed, Bennett said complaints could then be filed with the Nevada deputy attorney general. That could lead to hearings and sanctions for the men involved if it is found there were any violations of commission violations. Nurmagomedov is likely facing a suspension, UFC president Dana White said. White said “he could be stripped of the UFC lightweight title depending on the length of a potential suspension.”

“It’s a shame that a great night of fights ended the way it did,” Bennett said.

One thing to remember is Commissions don’t strip titles in MMA. Promotions do. So that decision is ultimately up to the UFC.

Dana white also confirmed 3 of Khabib’s corner men had been arrested but were released as Conor did not want to press charges,  Though he did say  “That If any of the men who attacked McGregor are in the UFC, they will not fight.”

Zubaira Tukhugov, a featherweight with a 3-1 record in the UFC, was one of those involved in the attack on McGregor, which isnt great news as  Dana White has promised that any contracted fighters who were involved in the brawl will never fight for the promotion again. Tukhugov is due to fight McGregor’s sparring partner Artem Lobov later this month which will be pulled.

So much mare to come from this story, keep the eyes peeled as i keep you all up to date
