UFC Fight Night 82: Hendricks vs. Thompson Recap & Results

Sunday February 7, 2016– UFC Fight Night Hendricks Vs Thompson Recap
The UFC made their return to Las Vegas for a welterweight showdown, on a night were the main event was supposed to be for the heavyweight title of the world the UFC did what they do best and that’s improvise. The old main event was set for champion Fabricio Werdum to defend his title against #1 contender Cain Velasquez, after both fighters pulled out of the fight due to injury’s the co main event slid in as the new main event. Former welterweight champion Johny Big Rig Hendricks a few months back was set to fight Tyron Woodley but due to failure of making weight the former champion was forced to pull out. Now in the best shape of his career Johny was ready to roll in the main event against Stephen Wonder Boy Thompson. Thompson is riding a five fight win streak including two of the last three being fight of the nights. Even though Wonder Boy isn’t ranked he still feels with a win here that he should be next for a title shot, two welterweights in the main event as we have already seen this year that sounds like a banger in the making. The co main event was a heavyweight brawl between Roy Nelson and Jared Rosholt, with both fighters in need of a win the two warriors didn’t hold anything back. OSP makes his return and a fight between two UFC new comers that has so much on the line. A full slate of prelims to kick things off followed by the main card all live and free on FS1.

Co Main Event Heavyweight Division
#11 Roy Nelson (21-12) Vs #12 Jared Rosholt (14-2)

The co main event was between two heavyweights that are in a division that is more wide open than any other in the UFC. Jared Rosholt is riding a big win streak and Roy Nelson is riding a 3 fight losing streak by only going 1-5 in his last 6 fights Nelson who always brings it doesn’t always get the win. Rosholt is trying to get inside the top 10 and a win here will do it. Two men that need wins to keep things rolling. The 1st round stars out with both fighters moving around the octagon not a lot of early action. Roy goes for a big swing and misses and Rosholt lays a nice combo on big country in return. As the 1st round comes to an end Rosholt starting to show some light by landing the left hand a few times towards the end of the round but overall the rounds was right down the middle. Tough round to score both fighters pretty much did the same thing, but towards the end both fighters started to find there flow. The 2nd round starts out with a lot of the same as the first with little to no action, Nelson lands a big leg kick that shakes up Rosholt but doesn’t lead to anything big. Both guys land huge right hands but both get shaken off, Nelson lands a few on Rosholt and Jared returns the favor. As the 2nd round comes to an end Nelson starts to take the lead in the fight with more landed punches than Rosholt. The 3rd round starts out with Nelson starting to let his hands fly and though a lot are not landing Rosholt is starting to fade. Rosholt goes for the takedown but Nelson defends it and continues to look for the finish. As the 3rd round comes to an end Nelson continues to land punches to gain the win. Not a lot of action all the way through the fight but Nelson’s landed punches have done enough to get the win. After going the distance the winner by unanimous decision Roy Nelson. A big win for Roy Nelson a must win for Big Country and he got it.

Main Event Welterweight division
#2 Johny Hendricks (17-3) Vs Stephen Thompson (11-1)

The main event has so much on the line for theses fighters as they both feel a win could land them a future title shot. Johny Hendricks is so close to another crack at the title, and Stephen Thompson feels that a win against the #2 ranked fighter in the world will land him in the top 10 rankings. Will the kicks of Thompson match up with the wrestling and hands of Hendricks? Both guys with so much on the line left it all in the octagon. The 1st round starts out with Hendricks closing off the octagon to land a few blows on Thompson, Hendricks goes for a take down and it gets turned away. Thompson starts to put pressure on Hendricks by landing some mean kicks that are also setting up a left jab that keeps landing. Hendricks lands a straight left to the chin of Hendricks that rocks the former champion and after that the Wonder Boy goes off and starts to pour it on Hendricks and that’s it. A 1st round TKO for Thompson. A complete domination for Thompson, there is no doubt that Thompson made a claim that he is worth the top 10 ranking. Hendricks got overwhelmed early and just couldn’t recover. Overall a big win and a huge lost for Thompson and Hendricks.

At the end of the night a lot of was gained all the way from the prelims to the main event. The UFC learned who Mickey Gall is and what his future plans are, Big Country got a big win that he was in desperate need of. In the main event Stephen Thompson took advantage of being in the new main event, by getting this win Wonder Boy made his claim that he should be next for a title shot. With so much controversy surrounding this night every single fight on the card tonight killed it. We say goodnight to you from Las Vegas.
