UFC Fight Night 88: Thomas Almeida vs. Cody Garbrandt Recap & Official Results
Sunday May 29, 2016— Live from the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas the UFC made their return to put on an amazing card capped off by a war in the bantamweight division. Cody Garbrandt and Thomas Almeida are both undefeated and are the future of the division, but tonight there can only be one winner and with a division that is stacked with so many contenders and upcoming stars a win for either of these competitors is a must. The main event isn’t the only big fight on the card as in the co main event the former bantamweight champion Renan Barao makes his debut in the featherweight division as he takes on #9 ranked featherweight Jeremy Stephens. After back to back defeats in the bantamweight division the former champion decided to move up in weight for different competition, Stephens has made it public that he wants to show Barao that featherweights hit a lot harder than bantamweights do. Another huge bantamweight match between Aljamain Sterling and Bryan Caraway, and a women’s bantamweight showdown between Jessica Eye and Sara McMann, Its Killa Season again as Abel Trujillo takes on Jordan Rinaldi and Rick Story returns to take on Tarec Saffiedine. A full slate of prelims to kick things off on UFC Fight Pass.
LET’S GET THINGS STARTED!!!
The 1st prelims bout was in the heavyweight division as Chris De La Roch (3-2) took on UFC new comer Adam Milstead (8-1), in the 2nd round Adam Milstead gets the TKO finish. These guys were throwing bombs from the first bell. Winner: Adam Milstead By TKO Round 1.
In the featured prelim fight on UFC Fightpass a bantamweight war between #4 Aljamain Sterling (12-1) took on #8 Bryan Caraway (21-8), A great back and forth fight that was dead even all the way through, a big first round for Sterling but Caraway managed to work his way back and earn the split decision victory. Winner: Bryan Caraway By Split Decision.
As the prelims switch to FS1 the lightweights are up first as Erik Koch (15-4) took on Shane Campbell (12-5), a dominant performance by Erik Koch as he seals the deal in round two. Winner: Erik Koch By Rear Naked Choke Round 2.
Next up in the middleweight division Jake Collier (10-3) took on Alberto Uda (9-1), a great fight that went Uda’s way in round one but Collier rallied back to hit a big spinning back kick to the body that floors Uda, the ground and pound comes and that is all she wrote. Winner: Jake Collier By TKO Round 2.
Next in the lightweight division its Killa Season as Abel “Killa” Trujillo (15-6) took on Jordan Rinaldi (12-5), Rinaldi had his moments but just couldn’t put Killa away, and with Trujillo landing his strikes and takedowns it proved to be enough to win the fight. Winner: Abel Trujillo By Unanimous Decision.
The Featured prelim fight featured former title challenger #6 Sara McMann (9-3) and #7 Jessica Eye (11-5) in a women’s bantamweight showdown. A one-sided fight from start to finish, Sara McMann showed her strong takedown and ground game. Evil Eye just couldn’t get going and could stop McMann. Winner: Sara McMann By Unanimous Decision.
The Main Card kicks off with a lightweight war between Joshua Burkman (29-13) and Paul Felder (12-2), after three bloody rounds of back and forth striking, Paul Felder famous chin held up as he sealed the deal on a great victory. Winner: Paul Felder By Unanimous Decision.
Up next to welterweights that were set to tear down the house as Jorge Masvidal (29-11) took on Lorenz Larkin (17-5), an awesome back and forth war between Masvidal and Larkin but at the end of the fight Larkin did more than enough to get the win. Winner: Lorenz Larkin By Split Decision.
Next in the middleweight division Chris Camozzi (24-10) took on Vitor Miranda (13-5), Another great back and forth bloody fight between Camozzi and Miranda but through all three rounds Camozzi did the most work to earn the victory. Winner: Chris Camozzi By Unanimous Decision.
Next up in the welterweight division #10 Tarec Saffiedine (13-5) took on the returning #11 Rick Story (19-8), a one-sided fight from start to finish Rick story put on a clinic in his return to the octagon. Winner: Rick Story By Unanimous Decision.
Co-main main event #3 (BW) Renan Barao (35-4) took on #9 Jeremy Stephens (25-12)
Renan made his debut in the featherweight division against one of the most dangerous guys in the division in Jeremy Stephens. Barao looking to make an impact in a new division as Stephens was trying to continue to climb the ladder to a title shot. A great fight for these two warriors. Barao looked well at home in the 1st round by putting intense pressure that was causing Stephens to retreat. In the 2nd round Stephens started to feel himself and started to really rock Barao, and his strong takedown defense kept Renan on his feet. All throughout the 3rd round Stephens and Barao exchanged strikes that at one time had both of them rocked, but after all three rounds Stephens did enough to get the decision. Winner: Jeremy Stephens By Unanimous Decision.
Main Event Bantamweight Division
#7 Thomas Almeida (21-1) Vs Cody Garbrandt (9-0)
The Main event featured two undefeated fighters that are the future of the division. Thomas Almeida is just a few wins away from a possible title shot, and Cody Garbrandt wants to show the entire division and the world that his time is now. From the start of the fight these guys started to throw high volumes of punches. Garbrandt started to throw big heavy combos that were all landing. Thomas became overwhelmed and continued to try to exchange with Garbrandt. Cody catches Almeida with a big right that floors him, ground and pound followed and that is all she wrote. a complete striking clinic put on by Garbrandt a well-earned win.
