DENVER, Colorado (Sat, January 28, 2017)– Live from the Pepsi Center in Denver Colorado the UFC made their return to Colorado with a 135 pound main event that could crown the next challenger for The Lioness Amanda Nunes. Juliana Pena and Valentina Shevchenko are the two top ranked fighters in the division and as hot as both ladies are, only one can be crowned the new #1 contender. Pena has won 4 straight fights including a big win over former title challenger Cat Zingano at UFC200, Pena knows how to finish a fight and with Shevchenko never being finished before The Venezuelan Vixen will have her hands full. As for Shevchenko she has already done battle with the current champ and lost a close decision, and in her last fight she picked apart former champion Holly Holm to earn this shot against Pena. Two of the baddest ladies in the world tangle for a shot at gold. In the co main event Donald Cerrone took on the red-hot Jorge Masvidal. Cowboy has run through the welterweight division sense making the move to 170 and Masvidal winning streak has earned him the right to take on top ranked opponents and with some bad blood between the two fighters leading up to this fight this is one you won’t want to miss. Also on the card a huge heavyweight fight between the veteran Andrei Arlovski and the rising star Francis Ngannou, Arlovksi is on a bit of a losing skid and needs a win to get back on track but Ngannou is a KO artist and knows a win over Andrei puts him inside the top 10. A huge featherweight fight between Alex Caceres and Jason Knight, and what might be the fight of the night in the bantamweight division Aljamain Sterling took on Raphael Assuncao. With the bantamweight division having a new champion a win for either of these guys is key if they want to prove that they should be next in line for a title shot. All the action Kicked off on the UFC Fight Pass before heading to FS1, and after the prelims were wrapped up the main card kicked off on FOX. Live from Denver.
LET’S GET THINGS STARTED!!!!
We kick things off in the lightweight division were Jason Gonzalez (10-3) took on JC Cottrell (17-4). Little time was wasted as Jason Gonzalez kicks off the night with a submission finish in the very first round over Cottrell. Winner: Jason Gonzalez (11-3) by Submission (D’Arce Choke) Round 1. – Loser: JC Cotttrell (17-5). Next up in the flyweight division two TUF competitors went head to head as Alexandre Pantoja (16-2) took on Eric Shelton (10-2). A very close fight on the score card and in the octagon but it was Pantoja that was able to edge out Shelton. Winner: Alexandre Pantoja (17-2) by Split Decision (29-28,29-28,29-28). – Loser: Eric Shelton (10-3).
The prelims was aired on FS1 and we start things off in the light heavyweight division as Marco Rogerio De Lima (14-5-1) took on Jeremy Kimball (14-6). Even though he missed weight Marco Rogerio De Lima wasted no time getting the job done as a slip by Kimball leads to a mean ground and pound session and that was all she wrote. Winner: Marco Rogerio De Lima (15-5-1) by TKO Round 1. – Loser: Jeremy Kimball (14-7). Up next we head to the middleweight division were Eric Spicely (9-2) took on Alessio Di Chirico (10-1). Another fight down with little time wasted as Eric Spicely continues to look spectacular as he finishes Di Chirico in the 1st round with a triangle choke. Beautiful technique off his back, what a finish. Winner: Eric Spicely (10-2) by Submission (Triangle Choke) Round 1. – Loser: Alessio Di Chirico (10-2). Alright up next we head back to the light heavyweight division were Henrique Da Silva (12-1) took on the undefeated Jordan Johnson (6-0). It was a perfect debut for Johnson as he shuts out Silva on the scorecard to seal the deal. Winner: Jordan Johnson (7-0) by Unanimous Decision (30-27,30-27,30-27). – Loser: Henrique Da Silva (12-2). Next up in the welterweight division Bobby Nash (8-1) took on Li Jingliang (11-4). A back and forth war between Nash and Jingliang, at times both were rocked but at the end it was Li Jingliang that earned the stoppage victory. Winner: Li Jingliang (12-4) by TKO Round 2. – Loser: Bobby Nash (8-2). Next up was a huge fight in the bantamweight division as #4 Raphael Assuncao (23-5) took on #7 Aljamain Sterling (12-1). A very close fight with a ton of ranking implications, and it came all the way down to the wire in a virtually identical score card and Assuncao who gets the nod and earns the victory. Winner: Raphael Assuncao (24-5) by Split Decision (29-28,29-28,29-28). – Loser: Aljamain Sterling (12-2). In the featured prelim bout we head to the middleweight division were Nate Marquardt (38-16-2) took on Sam Alvey (29-8). These two middleweights went back and forth through three rounds, and as the fight went on the altitude started to show and Alvey and Marquardt started to fade. Alvey had his moments were his strikes were landing and Marquardt just couldn’t find a steady flow. The score card was close but Alvey takes the close decision. Winner: Sam Alvey (30-8) by Unanimous Decision (29-28,29-28,29-28). – Loser: Nate Marquardt (38-17-2).
The main card kicked off in the featherweight division were Alex Caceres (12-9) took on Jason Knight (18-2). Jason Knight took his shot to be on the main card and ran with it as he dominates Alex Caceres and earns the first round submission finish. Winner: Jason Kight (19-2) by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) Round 2. – Loser: Alex Caceres (12-10). Next we head to the heavyweight division were the former heavyweight champion of the world #7 Andrei Arlovski (25-13) took on the upcoming star #10 Francis Ngannou (9-1). Ngannou does it again as a big right hand floors Arlovksi some ground and pound follows and that is all she wrote. No doubt Ngannou can be a future heavyweight champion. Sad to see Arlovski lose like that again but man what a finish. Winner: Francis Ngannou (10-1) by TKO Round 1. – Loser: Andrei Arlovski (25-14). In the co main event we head to the welterweight division were #5 Donald Cerrone (32-7) who has run a train through every 170 pounder that has been put in front of him took on the red-hot #12 Jorge Masvidal (31-11). After all the jawing and trash talking, this is one you won’t want to miss. A perfect performance by Masvidal from the jump he stood right in front of Cerrone and just pounded his way to a finish. Some big body shots and a constant home for the striking ends Cowboys run. Donald came out flat tonight, and Masvidal took it straight to the bank. Winner: Jorge Masvidal (32-11) by TKO Round 2. – Loser: Donald Cerrone (32-8).
Main Event Women’s Bantamweight Division
#1 Valentina Shevchenko (13-2) Vs #2 Julianna Pena (9-2)
In the main event the #1 contender spot was on the line to see who would be next to face the champion Amanda Nunes. Shevchenko and Pena are both the hottest fighters in the division and have taken out everyone that is behind them in the rankings. For the winner, she earns a title shot. For the looser, she will find herself right back in the pool of sharks that is the 135 pound women’s division. Into the 1st we go and the ladies start off in the clench and after some missed placed knees Shevchenko lands a couple of takedowns. After standing up from the first one Pena found herself in full guard and on her back. Shevchenko with some small ground and pound to close off round 1. A close round but Valentina stole the 1st. Into the 2nd and were right back into the clench and after a lot of back and forth Pena finally lands the takedown. Shevchenko goes right into full guard and Pena follows up with some small ground and pound but after positioning herself into the perfect position Shevchenko slips in an arm bar. Pena tried as hard as she could to get out but there was nothing she could do, the tap out came and that is all she wrote. A beautiful performance by Valentina Shevchenko. Pena had a slow start but capitalized in round 2, but the ground game was just not good enough tonight. Looks like were set up for a Shevchenko Vs Nunes 2, but this time it will be for the gold.
Winner: Valentina Shevchenko (14-2) by Submission (Arm Bar) Round 2
Loser: Julianna Pena (9-3)
