UFC Fight Night Fortaleza Belfort vs. Gastelum Recap & Results

BRAZIL (Sat, March 11, 2017)– Live from the Centro de Formacao Olimpica de Fortaleza in Brazil the UFC made their return with a packed card headlined by a huge middleweight main event. Former light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort looked to end his losing streak against TUF winner Kelvin Gastelum. Belfort has lost his last 2 fights by TKO but before that he was on a KO streak that earned him a shot at the middleweight title. After losing that title fight The Phenom looks to turn this losing streak around get back to his winning ways. Gastelum originally a welterweight missed weight one to many times and decided to move up to 185, a move that proved to be successful as in his middleweight debut Kelvin defeated Tim Kennedy in dominating fashion. Now looking to make it 2 in a row Gastelum will look to take down Belfort and move himself even closer to potential title shot. In the co main event Shogun Rua, another former light heavyweight champion looks to take another leap forward as he takes on the rising 205 pounder Gian Villante. Rua has won 2 in a row and Villante is coming off the biggest win of his career in front of his hometown fans, a lot is on the line in a jam-packed division. In the lightweight division top 10 ranked contenders Edson Barboza and Beneil Dariush went head to head. As everyone has seen the lightweight division is up in the air now and a win for both men is key if they want to get closer to a future title shot. Jussuer Formiga takes on Ray Borg in a huge flyweight fight bout. Bethe Correia looks to turn things around against Marion Reneau, and the rematch between Alex Oliveira and Tim Means finally takes place to settle weather it was an illegal knee or not. Francisco Trinaldo and Kevin Lee go head to head a lightweight showdown and Rony Jason takes on the undefeated Jeremy Kennedy in the featherweight division. We start things off in the middleweight division as Garreth McLellan (13-5) took on the undefeated Paulo Borrachinha (8-0). Borrachinha keeps it rolling! He walked into the octagon with 100% finish rate and he walked out the octagon with a 100% finish rate. Paulo destroys McLellan in the 1st round. What a finish! Winner: Paulo Borrachinha (9-0) by TKO Round 1. – loser: Garreth McLellan (14-5). Next up we head to the featherweight division were Rony Jason (15-6) took on the undefeated Jeremy Kennedy (9-0). A big first round for Kennedy a nice comeback round in the 2nd for Jason but Kennedy dominated the 3rd and took home the W. Winner: Jeremy Kennedy (10-0) by Unanimous Decision (29-28,29-28,29-27). – loser: Rony Jason (15-7). As the prelims switch over to FS1 we kick things off in the lightweight division as Michel Prazeres (21-2) took on Josh Burkman (29-14). Michel Prazeres wasted no time earning his first ever UFC finish as he rocked Burkman early took the fight to the ground sunk in the submission and that was all she wrote. Winner: Michel Prazeres (22-2) by Submission (North South Choke) Round 1. – Loser: Josh Burkman (29-15). Next we head to the bantamweight division were #14 Rani Yahya (23-8) took on the red-hot Joe Soto (17-5). A bloody back and forth war that goes the distance. Yahya looked good early and even though Soto was covered in blood he never stopped coming, but after the final bell rang it was Soto who got his hand raised. Winner: Joe Soto (18-5) by Unanimous Decision (29-28,29-27,29-27). – Loser: Rani Yahya (23-9). Up next in the welterweight division Sergio Moraes (11-3-1) took on Davi Ramos (6-1). a good back and forth fight especially for Ramos who took the fight on short notice but after going the distance it was Sergio Moraes who got the W. Winner: Sergio Moraes (12-3-1) by Unanimous Decision (30-27,30-27,30-27). – Loser: Davi Ramos (6-2). In the featured prelim bout we head to the lightweight division were the red-hot #11 Francisco Trinaldo (21-4) took on the dangerous Kevin Lee (14-2). Kevin Lee came into enemy territory and finishes Trinaldo. Lee was rocked early but came back strong and got the finish. Winner: Kevin lee (15-2) by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) Round2. – Loser: Francisco Trinaldo (21-5).

The main card kicks off in the welterweight division were Alex Oliveira (15-3-1) took on Tim Means (26-7-1) in a rematch. In their first fight the fight was stopped due to an illegal knee, but after a bunch of arguing about was it illegal or not the two linked back up and went to war. Alex Oliveira gets his redemption as he finishes Tim Means in the 2nd round with a rear naked choke. Winner: Alex Oliveira (16-3-1) by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) Round 2. – Loser: Tim Means (26-8-1). Next we head to the women’s bantamweight division as former title challenger #9 Bethe Correia (10-2) took on #13 Marion Reneau (7-3). Both women go the distance and Bethe Correia came out and performed in front of her hometown early but Reneau was able to weather the storm and get back into the fight. But the judges saw it right down the middle and the fight ends in a Majority Draw. Majority Draw (29-27,28-28,28-28) Bethe Correia (10-2-1) Marion Reneau (7-3-1). Up the we head to the flyweight division were #3 Jussier Formiga (19-4) took on #8 Ray Borg (10-2). What a war between these two top flyweights! Formiga looked strong early in the fight but the resilient Borg swung himself back into the fight even bloodied up Formiga. But after going the distance it was Borg who got his hand raised in victory. Winner: Ray Borf (11-2) by Unanimous Decision (29-28,29-28,29-28). – Loser: Jussier Formiga (19-5). We roll onto a huge fight in the lightweight division as #5 Edson Barboza (18-4) took on #9 Beneil Dariush (14-2). Edson Barboza does it again! A huge high knee that connects with Dariush and that was all she wrote. Dariush was OUT. Beneil was winning points wise till the finish, but Edson Barboza may have just punched his ticket to inside the top 5. Winner: Edson Barboza (19-4) by KO Round 2. – Loser: Beneil Dariush (14-3). In the co main event we head to the light heavyweight division were former champion #6 Mauricio Rua (24-10) took on #12 Gian Villante (15-7). What a war between these two light heavyweights! Rua came out fast in round 1 but as the fight wore on Villante started to land and even at a moment had Shogun against the cage and wobbly. But Shogun bit on that mouth peace and kept fighting, into the 3rd round and Shogun earns the stoppage finish by stopping Villante with strikes. Winner: Mauricio Rua (25-10) by TKO Round 3. – Loser: Gian Villante (15-8).

Main Event Middleweight Division
#9 Vitor Belfort (25-13) Vs #10 Kelvin Gastelum (14-2)

In the main event Kelvin Gastelum took on Vitor Belfort in a middleweight showdown. This was Gastelum’s 2nd fight at 185 and as it showed in his first fight this is where he belongs. Belfort is riding a 2 fight losing streak and knew that if he could take out the rising Gastelum he would find himself right back into title contention. Belfort and Gastelum live from HOT Brazil. Into the 1st round we go Vitor starts out early with a couple of quick combos but Gastelum responds with a big right hand that floors Belfort. Gastelum goes for the ground and pound and Belfort works his out and gets back to his feet. Once back to his feet Belfort throws and lands a big combo, but once again Gastelum lands flush on Belfort the Phenom goes down Big John steps in and that’s all she wrote. Gastelum finishes Belfort in the 1st round to continue his role at 185 pounds.

Winner: Kelvin Gastelum (15-2) by TKO Round 1
Loser: Vitor Belfort (25-14)
