CANADA (Sun, February 19, 2017)– Live from the Scotiabank Centre in Canada the UFC made their return up north with a huge heavyweight main event that will no doubt shake up the rankings come Monday morning. Derrick Lewis has run through every single opponent the UFC has put in front of him, but if he ever wants to take the next step towards a title shot he would have to face a top ranked opponent like Travis Browne. Browne has faced the best of the best in the heavyweight division, and though not all the decisions have gone the way he had wanted Big Hapa always brings the fight. So much on the line with two heavyweights that need a win if they ever taste gold. In the co main event former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks has put his weight problems behind him and moved up to 185 to face the dangerous Hector Lombard. This is a big step for Hendricks as he looks to take a step forward to building his career back to what it was, Lombard is on the back 9 of his career and a win over Hendricks could help find himself in the top 15. A big fight in the middleweight division as Elias Theodorou took on Cezar Ferreira, the winner of this fight could find themselves in the top 15. In the women’s bantamweight division, former title challenger Sara McMann looks to keep rolling as she took on the undefeated Gina Mazany. A big one in the strawweight division as former champion Carla Esparza took on Randa Markos, a win for Markos could find herself in the top 10 and as for Esparza she knows that she is only a couple of wins away from getting another crack at the title she lost. All the action kicks off on the UFC Fight Pass before heading over to FS1. Live on a Sunday in Halifax.

We get things kicked off in the middleweight division were Gerald Meerschaert (25-8) took on Ryan Janes (9-1). Little time wasted for Gerald Meerschaert as he slipped in the arm bar to get the tap out in the 1st round. Winner: Gerald Meerschaert (26-8) by Submision (Arm Bar) Round 1. – Loser: Ryan Janes (9-2). We stay in the middleweight division as Jack Marshman (21-5) took on Thiago Santos (13-5). Next we head to the strawweight division were former champion #3 Carla Esparza (12-3) took on Randa Markos (6-5). The ladies let it fly in Halifax! Markos striking game was on point but the strong ground game of Esparza kept her in the fight. But at the end of the night it was the constant pressure and foot work that helped Markos find a home for her strikes and that was enough to get the win. Winner: Randa Markos (7-5) by Split Decision (29-8,29-28,29-28). – Loser: Carla Esparza (12-4). It’s going to be tough for the welterweights to match that but they gave it their best shot as in the featured prelim bout Nordine Taleb (12-3) took on Santiago Ponzinibbio (24-3). Match the ladies and that’s what they did, Taleb and Ponzinibbio left it all in the cage and as blood was pouring out from both fighters it was Ponzinibbio that was able to do enough to get the win. Winner: Santiago Ponzinibbio (25-3) by Unanimous Decision (29-28,29-28,29-28). – Loser: Nordine Taleb (12-4).

Main Event Heavyweight Division
#8 Derrick Lewis (17-4) Vs #9 Travis Browne (18-5-1)

In the main event two heavyweights went head to head for a chance to move one step closer to a title shot. Derrick Lewis is on a 5 fight win streak and knows that a big win over Browne would move him into the top 5 and possibly earn him a title shot. As for Browne, Big Hapa is on a bit of a skid but a big win over Lewis could find him right back into contention. The Black Beast and Big Hapa do work live in Halifax! Into the 1st round we go the big dogs come out swinging early but after the bombs stopped flying Browne lands a big front kick to the body that hurts Lewis. Lewis is protecting his stomach while Browne continues to attack. Lewis lands a big right hand that knocks down Browne. When Browne gets back to his feet he lands another body shot to Lewis that drops the Black Beast in pain. Back to the feet and Browne continues to find a home for some big leg kicks that Lewis isn’t blocking, the bell sounds and that’s the end of the 1st. After 1 Lewis belly is in a lot of pain. Into the 2nd and Browne lands another big leg kick but that just seemed to piss off Lewis as he follows up by backing Browne against the cage and unloading. Lewis lands a lot of shots but Browne doesn’t seem to be fazed. Lewis then follows up with a takedown and continues to beat up on Browne. Travis works his way back to his feet and eats another right hand from Lewis that sends him back to the mat. Ground and pound followed and that was all she wrote. A hell of a performance by Derrick Lewis he was badly hurt but never stopped coming. Browne showed a lot of heart but just took to many shots. Derrick Lewis does it again by laying a KO on Travis Browne.

Winner: Derrick Lewis (18-4) by KO Round 2
Loser: Travis Browne (18-6-1)
