UFC Fight Night Zagreb Rothwell Vs Dos Santos Recap & Official Results

Sunday April 10, 2016 Live from Zagreb Croatia The UFC put on a fight card that was packed with heavy hitters from top to bottom, the main event featured two of the top heavyweights in the division as former UFC heavyweight campion Junior Dos Santos took on Ben Rothwell. With the winner of this fight possibly earning a title shot these two heavy hitters put it all on the line. Junior Dos Santos has only won 2 out of his last 5 fights, so that makes this a must win for the former champion and if he wants to stay relevant in the division a win by any means is necessary needs to happen. Ben Rothwell is riding a 4 fight win streak and feels that he is just a win away from a title shot, and a win over a former champion may just give Rothwell the shot at gold he has waited for. In the co main event the red-hot Derrick Lewis steps in to face Gabriel Gonzaga, and with both guys at the bottom of the rankings a win here could earn them a high ranked opponent in their next fight. Also on the card two young heavyweight clash as Francis Ngannou took on Curtis Blaydes, and top ranked women’s strawweight contender Maryna Moroz took Cristina Stanciu. A full slate of prelims to kick off things off.

LET’S GET THINGS STARTED!!!

The 1s prelim took place in the middleweight division as the undefeated Alessio Di Chirico (9-1) took on Bojan Velickovic (14-3), After going the distance in what was a pretty one-sided fight the winner by unanimous decision Bojan Velickovic. Next in the heavyweight division Jared Cannonier (8-1) took on Cyril Asker (7-2), in the 1st round a huge left hand followed by some nasty elbows gets Jared Cannonier the TKO finish.

Next up we head to the flyweight division as Rob Whiteford (12-4) took on Lucas Martins (16-3), After going the distance in a back and forth fight the winner by split decision Lucas Martins. Next up in the bantamweight division Filip Pejic (10-2-1) took on Damian Stasiak (9-3), in the 1st round Damian Stasiak spoils the debut for the hometown hero Filip Pejic as he finishes the fight by rear naked choke. Next up in the lightweight division Mairbek Taisumov (25-5) took on Damir Hadzovic (10-3), in the 1st round the winner by a nasty upper cut KO Maribek Taisumov. Taisumov had Hadzovic stunned before he landed the big uppercut, a perfectly executed finish. Next up back in the bantamweight division Ian Entwistle (9-2) took on Alejandro Perez (17-6), in the 1st round the winner by verbal submission Alejandro Perez. The fight started off back and forth, and at one point Entwistle had a nasty leg lock going but Perez was able to escape the leg lock and get into mount. From there the strikes came down and Entwistle gave up with the verbal submission.

Next in the featured prelim bout we go to the welterweight division as Nicolas Dalby (14-1-1) took on Zak Cummings (19-4), after going the distance the winner by unanimous decision Zak Cummings. All three judges saw this as a one-sided fight and that it was a huge dominating win for Zak Cummings. The main card kicks off in the women’s strawweight division as #9 ranked contender Maryna Moroz (7-1) took on the undefeated Cristina Stanciu (5-1), after going the distance the winner by unanimous decision Maryna Moroz, a good comeback win for Moroz she had control of the fight from start to finish. Next up in the light heavyweight division Igor Pokrajac (28-13) took on Jan Blachowicz (19-5), after going the distance the winner by unanimous decision Jan Blachowicz. A lot of heavy exchanges but Jan was able to land all of his takedowns and land the majority of the heavy shots, no doubt a huge win for Jan as he had been on a two fight losing streak.

Now we ride the heavyweight division all the way to the end of the card and 1st up was Tim Johnson (10-2) and Marcin Tybura (13-2), after going the distance in a back and forth war the winner by unanimous decision Tim Johnson, that win makes it 9 out of his last 10. We keep it rolling with the heavyweights as top heavyweight prospect Francis Ngannou (7-1) took on the undefeated Curtis Blaydes (5-1), after the 2nd round Curtis Blaydes eye was so bad that he couldn’t meet the requirements from the doctor to continue, so the winner by TKO Francis Ngannou. Two young heavyweight talents were tearing down the house, a shame is had to be stopped early.

Co Main Event Heavyweight Division
Derrick Lewis (15-4) Vs Gabriel Gonzaga (17-11)

Two heavyweights have the ability to end the fight at any second, stepping into the octagon looking to make their way into the top 15 rankings with a win. Derrick Lewis stepped in as a late replacement to face Gonzaga knowing that a win over the former champion challenger could land him a top 15 opponent. Gonzaga who wants to make one more run at a title shot needs to start piling up wins before it’s too late. Two heavy hitters set to do battle. The 1st round starts out with Gonzaga taking Lewis down early. After some ground work by Gonzaga, Lewis works his way back up to his feet. They work into the clench which leads to very little action. After getting separated by the ref, Lewis throws a big combination that lands, Gonzaga lands against the cage and that is where the shots came. Gonzaga sees stars that is all she wrote. A huge KO victory for Derrick Lewis. Gonzaga didn’t have a chance, once Lewis landed. A brutal KO finish.

Main Event Heavyweight Division
#4 Ben Rothwell (36-10) Vs #5 Junior Dos Santos (18-4)

The main event featured two of the top heavyweights in the world, Former champion Junior Dos Santos knows that his back is against the wall and a win is a must if he wants that shot at gold again. Rothwell is arguably the scariest fighter in the division and is riding a huge winning streak that has him so close to a title shot. A win for both fighters gets them one step closer to a title shot. Dos Santos has the speed and power, and Rothwell has the ability to slip in a submission or land a KO at any moment. Two heavyweight warriors ready to tear it down for a chance at glory. The 1st round starts out with both fighters feeling each other out, Dos Santos starts working the body of Rothwell, both guys land mean combos!!! WOW those were bombs. Dos Santos working the combos early. Rothwell is finding a home for the over hand right. Both guys land huge in an exchange. Dos Santos finds a home with the over hand right. Really staying steady and even as the 1st comes to an end. The 1st round showed that these guys have bombs in their gloves, right down the middle but Dos Santos may have the edge with the volume of strikes he landed. The 2nd starts out with some small exchanges from both guys. Dos Santos landing the quick jabs. Rothwell starting to land some leg kicks on the lead leg of Dos Santos, Rothwell’s eye is starting to swell and with the speed of Dos Santos Ben is starting to slow down. Dos Santos lands a huge right hand straight flush that rocks Rothwell but the bell sounds and that’s it for round 2. A huge round for Dos Santos but Rothwell is still very much alive. The 3rd starts out with Dos Santos Working the jab but Rothwell follows with a huge combination. The body shots are starting to wear down Rothwell as the quick jabs by Dos Santos are all landing. Junior lands a beautiful one two combo that lands and Rothwell eye is getting bigger and he is starting to fade. The 3rd round finishes with Dos Santos starting to pull away. The 4th round starts out with both guys landing mean sidekicks straight to the body. Junior Boxing is on point tonight. Rothwell taking a lot of jabs that are all landing. More and more sticking and moving by Dos Santos has Rothwell doing very little action as the 4th comes to an end. Rothwell will need a finish or submission to win this fight. 5th round starts out Dos Santos landing more body shots and quick jabs, Rothwell trying to find and opening to do something to give himself a chance to win. Rothwell goes for a huge left hook that misses and that may have been the last effort for Rothwell. Dos Santos lands another big left hand as the 5th comes to an end. That is all she wrote 5 rounds of a dominate performance by Dos Santos. After going the distance, the winner by unanimous decision Junior Dos Santos. A clinic was put on by Dos Santos a well-earned victory for the former champion. Rothwell showed a lot of heart but could never get comfortable.

At the end of the night the heavyweights took center stage and didn’t let us down. The rankings will be shaken up next week but the fighters of the UFC put on a hell of a show in Croatia.
