What’s next for the UFC’s New Featherweight Division?

(Mon, February 13, 2017)- The dust has settled from UFC 208 and a new champion was crowned in the newly created division in the form of Germaine de Randamie all be it in controversial fashion by unanimous decision (48-47 48-47 48-47) over Holly Holm. Germaine de Randamie landed two shots after the second round bell and the second shot seemed to stun Holm and yet again two more shots after the bell in third. Be the judge yourself if a point deduction was warranted. Never the less with Cristian “Cyborg” Justino sitting cageside taking it all in.

In her octagon interview de Randamie when asked about the possible matchup

“I want to fight everybody and if Cris Cyborg is who I have to fight that’s who I will fight but I really need surgery on my hand and we will see after that.”

Take that how you want but Cyborg took it or so it seems as though de Randamie may be possibly ducking the potential matchup and took to Twitter to challenge Invicta Interim Featherweight champion Megan Anderson suggesting to unify the belts which will not happen but should this be the first fight back for Cyborg?

According to UFC boss Dana White no, it will be de Randamie. So let’s hypothetically take a look at possible matchups for Cyborg upon her return aside from de Randamie. Look around there will not be current Bantamweights looking to move a class with Cyborg looming. The logical answer would be Megan Anderson who has won four straight on her way to Invicta Featherweight Interim gold her lone loss stateside is her first fight in the U.S. to Cindy Dandois back at Invicta 15. The Australia native who now trains full-time at Glory MMA and Fitness in Lee’s Summit, Missouri under the tutelage of UFC vets James Krause and Zak Cummings. During her four fight winning streak all have been TKO stoppages over the likes of Amber Leibrock, Amanda Bell, Peggy Morgan, and Charmaine Tweet.

The Featherweight division was created specifically for Cyborg and with other fighters calling out their fights why not make the matchup that Cyborg wants with Anderson? If de Randamie is out for an extended period of time, maybe a possible interim belt may be in order upon Cyborg’s return from suspension. Where does this leave Holm who has lost three straight? That remains to be seen but one thing for sure is this division may take a few bumps getting built up but it sure will offer some amazing matchups in the future
