What’s Next In The UFC 205lbs Division?

The Light Heavyweight division is in a very difficult situation right now. Daniel Cormier, the Light Heavyweight Champion, has accepted a super-fight against Heavyweight Champion, Stipe Miocic. This obviously leaves the #1 contender at LHW at a crossroads. Who’s the #1 contender though? Let’s dig into it!

So obviously a title shot against current Champion D.C. isn’t feasible in the near future, so what are the most feasible options for the Interim Championship or possible Undisputed World Champion at 205?

The division is muddy to say the least. The longest win streak in the division’s top ten belongs to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Yes, you read that right. That just goes to show you how lost this division is. Above Shogun is an absolute mess when trying to prioritize fighters and their rankings.

Now it’s time for rankings from #10 to the #1 contender. #10 Patrick Cummins fights #9 Corey Anderson. This is a fight that was supposed to happen months ago so it speaks for itself. Anderson is coming off of a brutal Knockout loss to Ovince Saint Preux while Cummins is on a two fight winning streak.

#7 Mauricio Rua is on a winning streak beating #9 Anderson in a controversial Split Decision in Rua’s home country of Brazil. I think the only logical opponent for Shogun is Ovince Saint Preux. Rua will have the opportunity to prove that he should be in the top five despite his recent competition while OSP will have the chance to prove that his most recent bout against Latifi was a fluke and deserves to stay in title contention.

#1 Alexander Gustafasson has to be in the most interesting situation at Light Heavyweight. Gus knocked out #3 Glover Teixeira just eight months ago in Sweden. Alex has recently taken to social media calling out current Champion, Daniel Cormier and D.C.’s teammate, Luke Rockhold. Rockhold has recently stated that his next fight will likely be at 205, which could be against #1 Contender, Alexander Gustafasson given the recent social media banter.

Time will tell at Light Heavyweight but as we have seen before, a seemingly boring division can become exciting as new opportunities emerge.
