WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING – GLOBAL CHAMPIONSHIP
HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT MAIN EVENT & THE RETURN OF AKIHIRO GONO
Fight Scheduled for February 7 at Tokyo Dome City Hall in Tokyo, Japan
LAS VEGAS, NV December 11, 2015– World Series of Fighting – Global Championship (WSOF-GC) has announced a heavyweight championship main event for their second event, which also marks their first event in Japan on February 7, 2016. The match up will pit well-rounded Hungarian fighter, Jani Istvan (10-1), against rising Russian knockout artist, Evgeny Erokhin (12-4).
Jani Istvan is relatively unknown to the world of MMA outside of Eastern Europe, but you can’t deny his impressive 10-1 record. Jani is currently on a seven-fight win streak, with six of those wins being finished by knockout or submission and with all of those finishes coming in the first round.
Evgeny Erokhin, brings his own impressive win streak into the decagon with six straight wins via knockout, including wins over Brett Rogers, Mike Kyle, Jeff Monson and Tim Hague. Erokhin previously fought for the WSOF-GC World Heavyweight Championship back on November 21 but was denied when the event was ruled a no-contest in the first round due to an inadvertent eye poke.
“Our first event in Hainan, China was a great success. Now it’s time for WSOF Global to set their sights on bringing more world-class fighters from across the globe to another market. We are thrilled to be promoting our next event in one of the true homes of martial arts, Japan,” lamented WSOF-GC President, Shawn Wright. “The fans in China were denied the crowing of our first champion, but it was always our intention of having that title defended in Japan. Now the fans in Japan will be the ones to witness history.”
Also on the main card, Japan’s Akihiro Gono (34-19-8) returns to the Land of the Rising Sun. Gono has spent the last several years competing in Brazil, where he went undefeated. This will mark Gono’s first fight in Japan since 2013. He will face off against Slovakia’s Miroslav Strbak (12-5-1).
“It’s a true honor to be able to promote someone like Akihiro Gono, who is one of the true legends of Japanese MMA,” said Jason Lilly, Vice President of Operations and Matchmaker for WSOF-GC.
“Gono won’t be the only big name Japanese fighter on the card either. There is a world of talent there that will honor us by being a part of our first event in Japan. Additionally, their opponents will represent fighters spanning countries from across the globe. This is truly turning in to Japan vs The World. It will be an amazing global event.”
WSOF-GC will host WSOF-GC 2 Japan at Tokyo Dome City Hall in Tokyo, Japan on February 7, 2016.
