WSOF-GC 2 Japan: May Ooi vs Anna Bezhenar
WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING – GLOBAL CHAMPIONSHIP
WSOF Global Adds May Ooi vs Anna Bezhenar to WSOF-GC 2 Japan
Fight Scheduled for February 7 at Tokyo Dome City Hall in Tokyo, Japan
LAS VEGAS, NV January 26, 2016– World Series of Fighting – Global Championship (WSOF-GC) has added one more exciting fight to an already stacked card on February 7. The match up will feature Singapore’s May Ooi (2-0) vs Ukraine’s Anna Bezhenar (1-1).
May Ooi is one of the top female prospects in Southeast Asia. May is previously known for having competed on the Singapore Olympic team. Unlike most athletes transitioning from Olympics to MMA, May does not come from a combat sports or grappling background. She was an Olympic swimmer, having competed in seven events at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. May stepped into the MMA arena for the first time as an amateur in 2013 with a submission victory, then followed that up with two KO/TKO wins in 2014 and 2015. She is currently undefeated in MMA competition. This fight will mark her 115lb strawweight debut.
May commented on her recent signing, “I can’t begin to describe how grateful I am for the opportunity given to me by WSOF Global. Pitting my skills against a very credible opponent on one of the biggest stage in the world, Tokyo Dome City Hall, the proving ground of MMA legends, martial art warriors and samurais, and the home of PRIDE. I’m a little starstruck. As the first Singaporean to fight on such a prestigious platform, I only just realized that being in the cage is a privilege. Not an entitlement. Thank you WSOF Global for believing in me. I’m ready for the home of the rumble!”
Anna Bezhenar is considered one of the best female pankration fighters in the world. She won the European Pankration Championship five years in a row, 2010-2014, as well as being a former FILA World Champion in Pankration, and a previous FILA Athlete of the Year. This will be the first event for both fighters under the WSOF-GC banner.
“I have accomplished many goals in my fighting career and this is the next big step,” Anna said. “I’m not just looking for this win, but to put together a string of victories and compete for a world title for WSOF Global. May is only the beginning of this journey.”
“These two ladies will be the lead in to an amazing show that we have planned for Tokyo,” states WSOF-GC President, Shawn Wright. “Because of each of their unique backgrounds, we feel both of these ladies deserve an opportunity to fight on this showcase event for us. We know they will thrill the Japanese fans, as well as all of the fans watching around the world from our website.”
Their fight will air EXCLUSIVELY on www.wsofgc.com at 230pm JST (UTC +9).
The event also features Japanese legends, Akihiro Gono, Michihiro Omigawa, and Hisae Watanabe. WSOF-GC President, Shawn Wright, adds “Having some of the most well-known and well-respected fighters in Japan’s history certainly is a testament that World Series of Fighting Global Championship is making a very positive progression into the MMA market in Asia. Although the main event features a USA vs Russia heavyweight battle, the rest of the card has shaped up to be Japan vs The World, with fighters from Slovakia, France, South Korea, United States, and Poland all taking on some of the very best fighters Japan has to offer. The addition of Singapore vs Ukraine gives us an unprecedented nine countries represented at this event.”
The event will air live on the WSOF-GC website, www.wsofgc.com. Fans watching the event can also win a Ducati motorcycle and other great prizes courtesy of SHOUT TV and Jim Beam. People watching online will need to download the SHOUT TV app and WSOF-GC app, then answer questions during the live event.
