Nate Diaz, a renowned professional fighter, is set to take on Jake Paul in a highly anticipated eight-round boxing match on August 5th, 2023, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which is responsible for overseeing all combative sports events in the state, confirmed that Diaz would be subjected to marijuana testing ahead of the fight, following an initial report by MMA Fighting.

Despite a growing trend towards the decriminalization and legalization of marijuana in many states, the TDLR has implemented a strict 50 ng/ml THC threshold for all combat sports events in Texas. Any athlete who tests positive for THC levels above the established threshold will receive a 90-day suspension and a $500 fine, and their victory will be overturned to a no contest.

This policy has caused controversy among some fans and athletes, as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed marijuana from its prohibited substances list in 2020. Many state athletic commissions and other regulating bodies have also followed suit. However, the TDLR has maintained that it will continue to enforce its marijuana testing regulations, citing concerns over athlete safety and the potential for impairment during combat sports events.

Nate Diaz is no stranger to controversy over his marijuana use, having been open about his substance consumption for many years. He has been seen smoking at press conferences and open workouts for his UFC fights and has even worn a CBD-infused gum shield during fights to help alleviate pain and inflammation. In a recent press conference promoting the Paul fight, Diaz was asked about drug testing, to which he responded,

“There’s a lot of weed in (my system). There is.”

However, when specifically asked about how he would deal with the no-tolerance policy for marijuana in Texas, Diaz appeared taken aback and asked,

“Wait what happened? Well, let’s go to California.”

Despite his nonchalant attitude towards the issue, Diaz will be subject to the same rules and regulations as every other athlete who competes in combative sports events in Texas.

Overall, the issue of marijuana testing in combat sports remains a controversial topic, with many athletes and fans calling for more lenient policies and a greater understanding of the potential benefits and drawbacks of the substance. However, for now, athletes like Nate Diaz will have to navigate the complex and ever-changing landscape of drug testing in combat sports if they want to compete in states like Texas.
