Danny Roman Continues Reign as NABA Champion; Hits 10 Wins in a Row

Danny Roman, right, successfully defended his NABA 122-pound title Friday night

ORANGE, Calif. (Feb. 14, 2016) – Danny Roman continued his reign as NABA ChampionFriday night, dispatching Ramiro Robles in the fifth round of Thompson Boxing Promotions “New Blood” main event.

With the win, Roman (18-2-1, 6 KOs) extended his winning streak to ten, and will likely climb the WBA rankings where he currently sits at number fourteen in the 122-pound division.
In the fifth, Roman tagged Robles (12-5-1, 6 KOs) with two body shots that sent Robles to the floor and unable to beat the count.
“The fight went as I expected,” said the 25-year-old Roman.  “Robles is a tough competitor, but I knew once I wore him down that I would have a shot at the knockout. I saw an opening in the fifth and was able to land some body shots that put him down for good.”
“It felt great to get my tenth straight win. I defended my NABA title for the second time. Everything is going in the right direction for me.”
In what was no doubt the strangest ending of the night, undefeated heavyweight LaRon Mitchell (11-0, 11 KOs) of San Francisco kept his knockout-winning streak intact with an odd first round stoppage of Juan Manuel Dominguez (6-5, 4 KOs) of Mexico.
Mitchell punched Dominguez into a corner, and while hunched over, Mitchell pushed Dominguez to the canvas. Dominguez, much to the dismay of everyone in the arena, could not continue after that. The official knockout came at the 1:18 mark of the first round.
Featherweight Fernando Fuentes (7-6, 1 KO) of Hemet, Calif. used a steady work rate to outpoint Jorge Ruiz (7-3, 2 KOs) of San Diego, Calif. The 6-round fight featured solid technical ability from both fighters. Fuentes, however, was busier and more accurate than Ruiz.
Top middleweight prospect Rudy Puga (7-0, 6 KOs) of Salinas, Calif. landed a powerful body shot that ended Alejandro Osuna’s (3-2, 2 KOs) night earlier than he might have wanted. Puga dropped Osuna in the first, and finished him in the second with a crushing left hook.  Puga is promoted by RocNation.
Jr. Middleweight Miguel Trejo (4-0, 3 KOs) crushed Tom Howard (8-7, 4 KOs) in the first round of their scheduled 6-rounder. Trejo, out of Anaheim, Calif., used his strong jab to set up his heavy right hand. The Miami-based Howard absorbed a handful of punches early in the round, but was dropped for good at the 2:28 mark.
Opening the “New Blood” card were bantamweights Jhordy Ramirez (2-0, 1 KO) of Santa Maria, Calif. and Juan Carlos Diaz (0-2) of Tijuana, Mex. Ramirez overcame a second round knockdown to pull out a unanimous decision win, 38-37 all around.
The action was fast and furious throughout the four rounds. Diaz got the better of Ramirez in the second with non-stop pressure that forced Ramirez to take a knee. Ramirez, however, would turn the tables on Diaz in the remaining rounds to stay unbeaten.
