WBA Champion Shun Kubo and Danny Roman at Friday’s Press Conference in Kyoto, Japan
ORANGE, Calif. (Sept. 2, 2017) – World title challenger Danny Roman (22-2-1, 8 KOs) and WBA champion Shun Kubo (12-0, 9 KOs) addressed the Japanese media for the final time on Friday.
Kubo defends his 122-lb. title for the first time, and Roman finds himself in the first world championship fight of his career this Sunday, Sept. 3, from the Shimazu Arena in Kyoto.
The 12-round WBA world championship fight is promoted by Shinsei Boxing Gym, in association with Thompson Boxing Promotions.
Roman was measured and reserved in his responses during the question and answer portion of Friday’s fight week press conference.
“This is my first world title fight,” Roman said. “We are really excited for it. I hope the Japanese fans like my style. I’m going to be ready for whatever Kubo brings. I’ve been preparing for this moment since I began boxing. I’m ready to be at this level.”
The Los Angeles native is in the middle of the strongest stretch of his professional career. Roman is riding a 14-fight winning streak and is the former NABA champion. He’s been dismantling opponents on the scorecards, winning virtually every round on every scorecard during his lengthy hot streak.
In Kubo, he’ll go up against one of the rangiest opponents to date.
“He boxes well. His skill set is very obvious,” Roman said. “He uses his distance and reach to his advantage. I expect a tough fight.”
“Danny is in excellent shape both mentally and physically,” said Ken Thompson, president of Thompson Boxing. “This is the perfect time for him to be in this position. He’s a tireless worker, a true professional. I know he’ll be coming back to the United States as a world champion.”
“Danny is ready for a tremendous fight,” said Alex Camponovo, matchmaker and general manager for Thompson Boxing. “He’s earned the right to be on this stage and we’re confident that he’s going to win the world title on Sunday. We’re extremely thankful to the WBA and Mr. Kubo and his team for making this fight happen.”
