EFC 42 Delivers Thrilling Night of Fights

Cape Town, South Africa – Norman ‘Chef’ Wessels successfully defended his light heavyweight title to cap off a towering night of fights at EFC 42, held at the GrandWest, Grand Arena last night.

The bout between Wessels and the Congo’s Champion Dalcha was one of the most highly anticipated in years. A bitter feud erupted during the fight’s build-up. The respective camps of Fight Fit Militia (Wessels) and Dragon Power (Dalcha) fought a controversial war of words, which was finally settled when Dalcha was finished by rear naked choke in the second round.

“I told you, I’m going to take it all!” Wessels roared in his post-fight interview. Wessels has now decimated the division, and sits waiting for a new opponent to show the skills to match him.

In the same weight class South African Tumelo Maphutha made a return to form with the obliteration of Belgian Mark Vlieger, ending their bout by TKO in the third round. Tainted by dour performances lately, Maphutha is back with the hard punching power that made him famous.

The featherweight division revealed an exciting new number one contender when Scotsman Danny Henry defeated local Matthew Buirski in a brutal three round fight. Henry, now with two wins in the EFC organisation and showing sensational form, will face champion Boyd Allen in an historic event featuring three title bouts in Johannesburg, October 03.

Both heavyweight champion Andrew van Zyl and lightweight champion Leon Mynhardt will also be defending their titles on a huge night of fights.

Rounding out the main card, young hopeful Mark Hulme re-established himself as a force to be feared in the welterweight division. He dismantled tough as nails Francois Kabulu by decision in three rounds of precision grappling.

Fight of the night honours were taken by Henry and Buirski for their decision war, while US athlete Dave Mazany and local man Cameron Pritchard also banked performance bonuses.

Mazany returned to African shores with a faultless destruction of Sibusiso Mdoku. Pritchard showed true grit in weathering a crunching punch to the jaw from Congolese athlete Bruno Mukulu, and going on to win by Rear-Naked Choke submission in the second round.
