Hendin to challenge featherweight champion Vucenic at CW 134

A new main event has been set for Cage Warriors 134, with James Hendin (6-1) stepping in to take on reigning champion Jordan Vucenic (8-1) in a featherweight title bout.

The sold-out event will take place this Friday night, 18th March, at the Indigo at the O2 in London.

Vucenic had been due to defend his belt in an eagerly-anticipated rematch with Paul Hughes. However, a neck injury has forced Hughes out of the contest.

The Irish fighter’s misfortune presents a huge opportunity for Hendin to stake a claim for championship honours in the 145-pound division at the expense of his fellow Englishman.

 James Hendin, Paull McBain

Hendin had been preparing to take on Tobias Harila following the withdrawal of his original opponent, Steve Aimable.

“You never like to lose fighters at this late stage before an event – especially one of the calibre of Paul Hughes – but the reshuffle that has matched Jordan Vucenic with James Hendin ensures that this Friday’s show still has a mouthwatering main event,” said Cage Warriors president Graham Boylan.

“Hendin has given Cage Warriors fans several demonstrations of his quality over the course of his professional career. Had he beaten Tobias Harila, he would have been firmly in title contention anyway, so this is an alternative scenario that makes a lot of sense.

“I’m disappointed for Paul Hughes and I wish him a swift recovery. I’m also pleased to say that Paul will be in attendance on the night, which will give fans a chance to meet one of Cage Warriors’ most talented athletes.”

 Tobias Harila, Aidan Stephen

Tobias Harila (9-2) will remain on the Cage Warriors 134 card, with the Swede now scheduled to face Decky McAleenan (7-4) in a lightweight bout.

Due to the withdrawal of Johan Romming, Darren Stewart will instead be rematched for Cage Warriors’ double header in Manchester on 1st/2nd April.
