Former WEC and UFC featherweight best José Aldo will make his bantamweight bow this December at UFC 245, as he meets one-time divisional title challenger, and fellow Brazilian striker, ‘Magic’ Marlon Moraes.
Rumblings began circulating earlier this week, suggesting Aldo would make the drop in weight in order to make a final run for Octagon gold, and on December 14th. in Las Vegas, the Manaus native with square off with compatriot Moraes. Aldo dropped his third loss in five outings against Alexander Volkanovski last time out, losing a two-fight win streak which featured two highlight reel stoppages of Jeremy Stephens, and another fellow Brazilian, Renato Moicano in the process.
Former World Series of Fighting bantamweight best Moraes earned a crack at the vacant crown at UFC 238 in July via a submission of former-foe Raphael Assuncao. Despite starting strongly against Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo, the talented kickboxer appeared to drop off the pace in the later rounds, with Cejudo capitilizing with a ground-and-pound stoppage to become a two-weight world champion.
One of the greatest featherweights to ever step foot into mixed-martial-arts, Aldo was long rumored to make the leap to lightweight, especially in the last couple of years, but the draw of meeting with the previously mentioned Cejudo seems to have teased the Brazilian to make the 135 pound limit.
UFC 245 takes place from the T-Mobile Arena on December 14th. with a bad blooded welterweight title clash between Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington sealed as the main event, while a bantamweight title tilt rematch between Amanda Nunes and Germaine de Randamie is also set to place. In our co-main event, a 145-pound championship meeting between Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski also features in a three title showing.
Welterweight veteran Matt ‘The Immortal’ Brown ends a two-year hiatus from the Octagon in December, as he meets wily grappler Ben Saunders, and Jessica Eye looks to return to winning ways after her shocking championship head kick knockout loss to Valentina Shevchenko, as she meets the talented finisher, Viviane ‘Vivi’ Araújo. Former welterweight champion and the still dangerous puncher Robbie Lawler makes a quick turnaround at the event, as he searches for an opponent replacement after originally penned opponent Santiago Ponzinibbio was forced from the matchup due to a staph infection.
A meeting of the surging Irene Aldana and title hopeful Ketlen Vieira has also been finalized for the stacked event. A high stakes flyweight pairing has also been confirmed for the card, as Brandon Moreno replaces the since cut Sergio Pettis, and takes on the up and coming Kai Kara-France. Bantamweight title chasers Petr Yan and former WEC featherweight champion Urijah ‘The California Kid’ Faber also throw down on the promotion’s final pay-per-view event of the year.
