Off the back of a spectacular Fight of the Night outing against the #2 ranked, one-time title challenger, Gilbert Burns at UFC 273 over the course of the weekend, Khamzat Chimaev has sights aimed on the trio of Leon Edwards, former interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington, and current kingpin, Kamaru Usman next – hinting at an Abu Dhabi, UAE outing next.
Improving his undefeated record to 11-0 in a high-profile main card clash with Burns in Jacksonville, Florida – Chimaev was forced the distance for the first time in his professional career, managing to edge out a unanimous decision win over the Brazilian in a wholly competitive back-and-forth.
Both prior and post-fight, UFC president, Dana White claimed that he would be interested in booking Chimaev against former interim titleholder, Covington next if the Chechnya native knocked back Burns – potentially on an ABC broadcasted event.
Appearing to share a similar plan, Chimaev called out Covington – as well as Usman and the #3 ranked contender, Edwards next, as well as hinting at a potential Abu Dhabi outing for the fourth time in his UFC tenure.
“Who’s next?” Khamzat Chimaev tweeted. “@USMAN84kg @ColbyCovMMA @Leon_edwardsmma #AbuDhabi (blood droplets emoji).”
Whilst yet to officially book a July return as expected against Edwards, Usman is still widely expected to meet the surging Birmingham contender in a title rematch at UFC 276 in the summer.
For Covington, the Clovis native landed a comprehensive unanimous decision win over arch-rival, Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272 last month – before the two were involved in an alleged altercation three weeks following the bout.
