Luthando ‘Shorty’ Biko: The Global Warrior Ready to Conquer BRAVE CF
In the world of mixed martial arts, few fighters embody the term “global athlete” quite like Luthando ‘Shorty’ Biko. At 35 years old, Biko’s career trajectory showcases his indomitable spirit, tactical mastery, and a wealth of experience that transcends continents. With a professional record of 12 wins and three losses and a journey through some of the sport’s most respected organizations, Biko is poised to make waves as he prepares for his highly-anticipated debut at BRAVE CF 91 against undefeated prospect Muhammad Mokaev.
The Early Chapters
Biko’s MMA journey began in 2014, when the 5’0″ warrior from South Africa stepped into the amateur circuit. Compiling a four-win and one-loss record by 2016, he quickly transitioned to the professional ranks in March 2017. His crowning achievement came at EFC 75, where he captured the EFC Bantamweight Championship.
Setbacks and Comebacks
Every champion faces adversity and, for Biko, it came in April 2019 when he lost the title. True to his resilient nature, Biko rebounded with two decision wins that year, proving his mettle.
In 2020, the global pandemic disrupted his career momentum, sidelining him temporarily. But Biko returned stronger, engaging in a two-fight saga that captured the entire African continent’s attention with Nkazimulo Zulu in 2021. After a submission loss in their first meeting, Biko exacted revenge later that year, defeating Zulu via first-round strikes to claim the EFC Flyweight Championship.
A Global Trailblazer
At this point, ‘Shorty’ had become a permanent fixture at the Port Elizabeth Submission Fighting Academy (PESFA) under the esteemed Chris Bright. Training alongside the likes of Sindile Manengela, Shadrack Nsua, and more, Biko has become a master of wrestling and grappling – skills that have cemented his reputation as one of Africa’s finest MMA fighters.
From 2022 onwards, Biko expanded his horizons. Biko sought opportunities outside of the African continent, and this led to victories at UAE Warriors and ARES Fighting Championship, proving his versatility and adaptability across different promotions. But there was one more arena of combat that Biko wanted to dominate.
The Challenge of Mokaev
Biko’s upcoming bout against Muhammad Mokaev at BRAVE CF 91 is a clash of styles and narratives. Mokaev, an undefeated prodigy, represents the new wave of MMA talent. But Biko’s rich tapestry of experience across multiple organizations makes him an unpredictable and dangerous opponent.
Despite suffering an injury that delayed his BRAVE CF debut (which was supposed to take place at BRAVE CF 82), Biko remains a formidable force. Before stepping into the BRAVE CF cage, one could already argue that Biko has proven he is a global fighter.
Biko Finally Steps Into The BRAVE CF Cage
As he prepares for the challenge of Mokaev, Biko carries the hopes of his gym, the entire African continent and the weight of his storied career. Biko’s name is already etched into the annals of African MMA as a pioneer who fearlessly traversed the globe in pursuit of greatness. For now, all eyes are on BRAVE CF 91, where Biko aims to remind the world why he’s a true global warrior.
