Quick fire questions with Tony Johnson

Thursday January 7, 2016 Heavy weight fighter Tony Johnson (9-2) is busy in camp preparing to take on Raphael Butler (9-1) at Bellator 148: Paul “Semtex” Daley vs. Andy Uhrich. With a hectic schedule he managed to squeeze in some time for some quick fire questions with FightBookMMA.com

What is the inspiration behind the tattoos?

“The inspiration behind the tats on my forearms come from my children. It’s their names in Hebrew. The foot prints are from my two twin boys that passed at birth. The mess on my back is from a cover up. I was young and dumb. Tatted my first team on my back. Haven’t fixed it yet!! “

What got you into mma?

“Growing up I always wanted to learn boxing/kickboxing. After college I was finally able to learn. I fell in love instantly, decided to fight a couple months later.”

What motivates you?

“What motivates me is my family. My girls. I want them to have everything I didn’t have, plus more.”

How’s Bellator treating you?

“Bellator has been great. Only wish I have is to fight more often. My goal in 2016 is to fight a minimum of 3 times. I would to fight with Rizin in Japan!”

How’s fight camp going?

“Fight Camp is amazing. Best shape in my life, literally! “

How do you see this fight playing out?

“I see this fight playing out with my hand being raised. This is my statement fight.”

What was it like to fight Daniel Cormier?

“Fighting Cormier was a great experience. I learned a lot from that fight. The main thing was. I need a strong team..management and all. It really does make a difference.”

(Johnson suffered a loss by rear naked choke to Cormier)

In your career what fight stands out as a favorite?

“Tim Sylvia”

(Johnson beat silva by Tko in the 3rd round in 2013)

What fight was the toughest? And what made it the toughest?

“Fighting a 2x UFC world champ off a two year lay off. His height, and reach was a tough obstacle to get over.”

What fighters do you enjoy watching?

“Jon Jones, Carlos Condit, Robbie Lawler, and of course Conor McGregor”

Do you have any fighters that inspire you? Or you really ️respect?

“Honesty I respect all fighters. It’s not easy being locked in a cage with a man that wants to take your head off. That takes a special person. Jon Jones inspires me. Not only because of his skill, but his mind. His able to take it to a place where very few can go.”

Who’s on the radar? Who do you want to fight in the upcoming new year?

“Of course the Bellator champ Vitaly. He has fought in almost 2 years. I don’t know what’s going on with that but for sure he is. Cheick Kongo he’s number 2 In Bellator, and I would love to get my Hands on slow ass Bobby Lashely. Would love to stop his slow ass shot! He’s had a lot of “give me” fights. It’s time for him actually fight real competition! I just want the Belt, JUST LINE THEM UP, I’m more the ready.”

Much respect to Tony for his honesty and making time for us. Tune in to Bellator 148 on January 29, 2016 as these two heavy weights collide!
