Former UFC light heavyweight champion, Alexander Gustafsson is slated for a light heavyweight division return on July 23. – tackling the #11 ranked contender, Ukraine-born challenger, Nikita Krylov.
Gustafsson, who has competed for light heavyweight spoils on three separate occasions, saw recent bouts with both Ben Rothwell, and Paul Craig fall to the wayside – with his most recent coming just less than two years ago.
The Arboga native made his heavyweight divisional bow at UFC Fight Island 3 in July 2020, suffering a one-sided first round armbar submission loss to former undisputed division champion, Fabricio Werdum.
Luhansk native, Krylov, on the other hand, himself suffered a first round triangle submission loss to the above mentioned, Craig on the preliminary card of UFC Fight Night London back in March – with the defeat coming as his second consecutively. FrontKick MMA was first to report the pairing of Gustafsson and Krylov on July 23.
A former three-time light heavyweight title challenger, Gustafsson twice challenged former two-time division titleholder, Jon Jones, as well as pushing former two-weight gold holder, Daniel Cormier the distance.
Over the course of his professional career, Gustafsson has defeated the likes of Thiago Silva, Shogun Rua, Jimi Manuwa, as well as former champion, Jan Blahcowicz, and current undisputed light heavyweight best, Glover Teixeira.
An official headliner for the July 23. card has yet to be determined by the organization, however, the event is currently expected to take place in England – ahead of a potential second visit to the capital for another UFC Fight Night London showcase this year.
