Report – Askar Askarov vs. Alex Perez slated for UFC event on July 16.

A high-stakes flyweight pairing between the #3 ranked contender, recent UFC Columbus feature, Askar Askarov – and the #5 ranked, one-time title challenger, Alex Perez, has been booked for a UFC event on July 16. – with a billing, location, or venue for the event yet to be determined by the organization.

Askarov, who suffered his first professional loss last month on the main card of UFC Columbus, dropped a close, unanimous decision defeat against Kiwi contender, Kai Kara-France over the course of three rounds. Askarov had landed three prior wins before than following a split draw in his UFC bow.

For Perez, the Hanford native has been sidelined since headlining UFC 255 on short notice against current undisputed flyweight champion, Deiveson Figueiredo in November 2020 – suffering a first round guillotine loss. Perez’s management firm, Iridium Sports Agency confirmed their client’s return against Askarov on their official Twitter account.

Askarov, a native of Dagestan, entered the UFC back in September 2019, boasting an 11-0 professional record, arriving as the ACB flyweight champion.

Debuting against former division titleholder, Brandon Moreno – Askarov battled to a split draw over the course of three rounds.

Prior to his above-mentioned judging loss to Kara-France, Askarov defeated the trio of Tim Elliott, Alexandre Pantoja, and multiple-time title challenger, the now-retired, Joseph Benavidez. 
For Perez, the Dana White’s Contender Series alum has featured seven times under the UFC banner – landing a 5-2 promotional résumé. In promotional wins, Perez has defeated Eric Shelton, Jose Torres, Mark De La Rosa, Jordan Espinosa, and in his most recent win, promotional veteran, Jussier Formiga.

In his only other UFC defeat, Perez dropped a late opening round knockout loss to the aforenoted common-opponent, Benavidez. Perez, a staple of Team Oyama in California – was forced from numerous attempted pairings with Matt Schnell since his loss to Figueiredo, most recently at UFC 271 in February.
