Reigning undisputed UFC lightweight titleholder, Charles Oliveira has booked the next challenger to his 155lbs throne – taking on former interim lightweight best, Justin Gaethje on May 7. at UFC 274. At the time of publication, a location or venue for the event has yet to be determined by the organization.
For Oliveira, the surging lightweight kingpin extended his undefeated streak to 10 straight outings back in December in the main event of UFC 269 – submitting another former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier with a third round standing rear-naked choke.
Arizona finisher, Gaethje turned in the 2021 Fight of the Year alongside Michael Chandler at UFC 268 back in November at Madison Square Garden – besting the Missouri native with a unanimous decision. The news of Oliveira’s clash with Gaethje was first reported by ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto, as per UFC president, Dana White.
Clinching the vacant lightweight title back in May of last year in Houston, Texas – Oliveira stopped the aforenoted common opposition, Chandler with a second round knockout in a rallying performance at the Toyota Center.
The most prolific submission ace in the history of the UFC, Oliveira has so far chalked up a jaw dropping 15 separate submission victories since his Octagon tenure began back in August 2010.
For Gaethje, the May 7. outing will come as the Trevor Wittman product’s second crack at undisputed lightweight spoils, following a second round triangle loss to the now-retired, Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254 in October 2020.
