Out of action since October 2020, Mountmellick native, Charlie Ward is set to make his first Bellator outing following an almost two-year layoff – returning at Bellator 281 on May 13. in a middleweight matchup against Brazil’s, Alan Carlos at the OVO Arena in London, England.
Charlie Ward, who once occupied the middleweight top-15 rankings, most recently appeared at a Bellator Euro Series event in October 2020 in Milan, Italy – scoring his second consecutive victory courtesy of a unanimous decision win over Andy Manzolo.
38-year-old Bahia native, Carlos will make his Bellator debut at the upcoming London event, most recently landing a unanimous decision victory over Norman Paraisy back at Cage Warriors 93 back in April 2018. Daily Mirror reporter, Donagh Corby was first to report Ward’s return against Carlos.
41-year-old Ward was initially scheduled to compete at Bellator 270 back in November of last year on home soil in a pairing with Norbert Novenhi Jr. until the Hungarian suffered a torn ACL, forcing him from proceedings.
In turn, Ward was then booked to meet with Fabian Edwards, the younger brother of the #3 ranked UFC welterweight contender, Leon Edwards, until the former suffered a ruptured bicep – forcing his withdrawal from the 3Arena event.
9-4 as a professional, Ward, who boasts six professional knockout victories – had competed twice under the UFC banner, dropping losses to both Abdul Razak Alhassan and Galore Bofando in two knockout blemishes.
Since his November 2017 Bellator MMA bow, Ward has landed a 6-1 promotional résumé under the Scott Coker-led banner – besting John Redmond, Martin Hudson, Jamie Stephenson, Justin Moore, and Kyle Kurtz to go with his above mentioned victory against Manzolo.
13-9 as a professional, Carlos once shared the Cage Warriors stage with former promotional champion and now-UFC middleweight challenger, Jack Hermansson – suffering a third round knockout defeat. In notable wins for Carlos, the Brazilian has bested Petras Markevicius, Mike Ling, Daniel Acacio, and the previously mentioned, Paraisy.
Bellator 281 takes place on May 13. from the OVO Arena in London, England – with an interim welterweight title fight between Michael Page, and Logan Storley set to take main event honors in the promotion’s return to the U.K.
