Also on the card we will see Ricky Maynez (AM 3-1) who trains out of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu El Paso fighting out of El Paso, TX as he will take on Nathaniel Gomez (1-3) from Albuquerque, NM. But Before Ricky steps in the cage at the Southwest Brawl 7 event, he sat down with FightBookMMA to talk about his upcoming fight and what his plans are in the near future.

Ricky thank you for taking the time to talk to me out of your busy schedule.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I’m 28 years old. I have 2 beautiful daughters that mean the world to me. Everything I do is to give them a better future. They are why i get up & train hard everyday.

How did you get the nickname “SAVAGE DIAMOND?”

The name comes from the way diamonds are made. They are molded through a rough, brutal, and savage process. Under the pressure of the worlds weight, beautiful resilient diamonds are formed. Like a diamond I’ve risen through obstacles that have shaped me to be who I am today. I’ve attained an unbreakable will and desire to overcome all that life may present. I’m self-named and the name is the truth.

What made you become an MMA fighter?

I started watching UFC from the moment it first came on the scene. UFC 1 in 1993. I was 4 years old & my dad had ordered it on PPV. My whole family was there and we were all gathered around the 28inch TV. I saw it and a desire to be in that cage and fight started growing then. I was in and out of martial arts throughout my life but never got fully dedicated until now. Now I’m here and I’m not looking back. I have a family to provide for and I’m all in. No Limit.

If you weren’t fighting what would you be doing?

If I wasn’t fighting I’d probably be making music.

Music huh, I can see you doing that. OK Ricky I like asking these three quick questions to all the fighters I talk to just so thethe fans can get to know just a little bit about yourself.

What is your Favorite movie?

All time favorite would have to be either “He Got Game” with Denzel Washington or “Rocky 4” Tough choice.

Your favorite food?

LambChops

If you can fight anyone past or present who would it be and why?

TJ Dillashaw. Gotta beat the best to be the best & he’s the champ at my weight class.

Can you tell us what makes Ricky Maynez different from other fighters?

I’ve died before and been revived with a defibrillator. That’s was enough to change my whole perspective on life. The way I now see life makes me a different breed of fighter. My Faith in my family and love for my daughters makes me a different breed of fighter.

Whoa that’s insane that you died before well I know I’m glad and I’m sure your family and friends are happy to see you’re here with us. Ricky for the fans out there that are getting to know you, I see you have tattoos what do they mean to you?

My tattoos represent my Journey, my beliefs, my growth & my Vision to sum it all up.

You recently fought at JACKSONWINK FIGHT NIGHT 2 I had the pleasure to watch you fight since I was covering that event. You took on Alex Jones and defeated him by split decision.

This was a really good fight, are you doing anything different as you take on Nathaniel Gomez at the Southwest Brawl 7 event?

As many people already know I was supposed to be fighting for the belt. Unfortunately my opponent pulled out & another fighter has stepped in…but it will not be a title fight. Either way I’ll be fighting & winning that night. I plan to go in there & execute My Game. Period.

Hows training going and what can we expect with this fight?

Training is going great. I train with a mixture of High Level Jiu Jitsu Competitors & Champions & Pro MMA Fighters & Strikers . I got the best of both worlds. Cant Complain.

Anything words you would like to tell your opponent?

Thanks for stepping up when a supposed Champ lacked the courage & discipline to do so. God Bless & see you @ weigh ins.

After this fight, are you planning on continuing fighting in the local scene as an amatuer or are you planning on turning Pro anytime soon?

I’ve been offered the amatuer bantamweight title fight Next for American Fight League. Since it was supposed to be on march 31st but the opp pulled out. But I’m not sure if I want to do the title fight next or go pro already. Either way ill be fighting for the Victory & ill be ready.

When you turn Pro, which promotion would you like to fight in and why?

AFL has been Great. LFA also seems badass. Just depends what opportunities open up.

How do you feel about your accomplishments so far in MMA and in life?

In MMA I’m finding I’m more and more comfortable every time I step in the cage. I’m feeling a sense of calmness now in the chaos. My only loss was For KOTC in Colorado and I took zero damage in an extremely controversial fight but either way I learned and have not lost since. Besides that i just beat the #1 ranked NM bantamweight amatuer and I feel I’m progressing daily. In Life I have 2 beautiful daughters that give me everything to fight for. In life I’m a Champion Already. God is great!

Any other goals you want to accomplish this year?

Go Pro. Be the best dad possible. Do better everyday.

Ricky its been a pleasure talking to you, lets catch up after this fight at Southwest Brawl 7.
