EXCITING WELTERWEIGHT CONTENDER SAMMY VASQUEZ
RETURNS TO HIS HOMETOWN TO TAKE ON JOSE LOPEZ
AS PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONSON FOX SPORTS 1 COMES TO
THE CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA CONVOCATION CENTER
IN CALIFORNIA, PA., TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 AT 9 P.M. ET/6 P.M. PT
Tuesday September 15, 2015– Plenty of fighters talk about going to war in the ring, but Army veteran Sammy Vasquez (19-0, 13 KOs) has been in real-life battle zones having served in Iraq during his time in the National Guard. A native of Monessen, Pennsylvania, Vasquez has become a major attraction in the Pittsburgh area, drawing thousands of fans when he fights there.
Now, coming off victory over hard-hitting Wale Omotoso in June, Vasquez puts his unbeaten record on the line against brick-fisted Mexican Jose Lopez (25-3-1, 15 KOs).
Lopez is riding an eight-fight winning streak since his loss to former multi-division champion Humberto Soto in November 2012. Lopez has stopped five opponents in that span, and will most assuredly check the chin of Vasquez.
Inspirational war veteran Sammy Vasquez (19-0, 13 KOs) puts his perfect record on the line against Jose Lopez (25-3-1, 15 KOs) in the 147-pound headliner September 15 as Toe-to-Toe Tuesdays returns to FOX Sports 1.
A crowd-pleasing 29-year-old boxer-puncher from Monessen, Pennsylvania, Vasquez survived a brawl in his most recent fight in June in Las Vegas, winning a unanimous decision over previously once-beaten Wale Omotoso.
With this bout taking place at the California University of Pennsylvania Convocation Center in California, Pennsylvania, Vasquez definitely will have the crowd on his side. But that doesn’t mean the southpaw will have an easy time of it against Lopez, who has notched eight straight victories since falling by unanimous decision to former champion Humberto Soto in November 2012.
The 24-year-old Lopez , of Torreon, Coalhuila de Zaragoz, Mexico, has racked up five knockouts during his winning streak, momentum that the “Piston” will attempt to build on during this clash, which is scheduled for 10 rounds.
How super is 130-pound prospect Omar “Super O” Douglas (14-0, 11 KOs)? Four of his last five fights haven’t even reached the third round as Douglas has overwhelmed challenger after challenger. Don’t expect Puerto Rico’s Braulio Santos (12-1, 10 KOs) to go down that easily, though.
With a knockout percentage hovering above 70 percent, Lopez is a threat to end a fight any time he lands some leather on an opponent’s jaw.
Undefeated super featherweight Omar “Super O” Douglas (14-0, 11 KOs) takes on Puerto Rico’s Braulio Santos (12-3, 10 KOs) as a replacement for the Williams vs Savigne bout originally scheduled. Savigne was forced to withdraw from the fight due to an injury sustained during training.
