Top 5 Flyweights set to clash in October
#4 ranked Askar Askarov will face #5 ranked Brandon Royval in a flyweight contender bout on October 15th.
Askarov (14-1-1 MMA, 3-1-1 UFC), from Dagestan, is coming off his first career loss against Kai Kara France. Despite that, he is known as a dominant wrestler and has notched impressive wins over #2 ranked Alexandre Pantoja and four-time flyweight title challenger Joseph Benavidez.
Royval (14-6 MMA, 4-2 UFC), from Denver, is riding a two-fight win streak and has earned Fight of the Night honors in three of his four UFC wins. His wildly entertaining style has led him to submit the likes of #3 ranked Kai-Kara France, #8 ranked Matt Schnell, and #10 ranked Tim Elliott.
This is a clash of styles as Askarov often fights with a calculated striking approach leading to his commanding wrestling, while Royval often engages in firefights leading to his slick jiu-jitsu. His fast-paced style could push Askarov’s cardio to the limit.
There is a flyweight title unification bout between champion Deiveson Figueiredo and interim champion Brandon Moreno looming. Expect the winner of this fight to be right back in the title picture.
