Travis Sumler goes for gold Saturday, eyes pro career

Top amateur prospect Travis Sumler is back in action Saturday, when he defends his Shamrock FC amateur bantamweight title at Shamrock FC 317 in Kansas City, LIVE on FloCombat. Before that, the fast-rising up-and-comer sat down with FightBook MMA.

How did you find MMA to begin with?

My cousin started going to a gym and I was always kind of looking for something related to martial arts to do, so it fit pretty well. I really love MMA because it’s every style of fighting mixed into one.

What have you taken away from your time in MMA so far?

It’s made me a well-rounded martial artist. It’s also taught me that there’s more to wins and losses when it comes to fighting.

With a title on the line for your next fight, does that add anything to the situation?

No, not really. It’s a cool opportunity to fight for a title, for sure, but I’m approaching it like all of my past fights. I’m just working really hard.

Are you going to fight as a pro?

Definitely. I’d like to fight as a pro pretty soon, but I’m going to leave that up to my coach. Not much would change when we make that transition.
